I recently returned from a trip to India, feeling so inspired by the array of vibrant, rich colors I saw everywhere, that I wanted to create my own “patchwork” of colors. I had a wonderful adventure, delving into the arts and crafts of Jaipur, Rajasthan. The fabrics and textiles are especially beautiful, and I learned how to do Kantha embroidery, and have added that detail onto my canvas, as well as the glitter of gold and gems. I was blessed to travel to this wonderful land of contrasts and beauty, and meet so many special people...my karma must be good!
Sketch shapes with pencil onto canvas to create a “patchwork” design. Fill in each block with bright colors using the Americana Premium acrylics.
Create the next layer with stencils and Fluid Acrylics. Dab paint on with sponge to create a tone on tone effect.
Stamp designs with archival ink into the color block areas, varying the designs. The idea is to make it look like different pieces of fabric.
Add gold highlights. Use Metallic Gold paint and a brayer to roll the paint on to a piece of bubblewrap. Press the bubble wrap over the entire canvas. Also, apply gold paint to the henna stamps to add another layer of gold into some of the sections.
Add a glittery gold frame to the canvas using Metallic Lustre, Gilding Flakes and Glamour Dust.
Apply colorful ribbons and gems around each color block using adhesive. Finally, apply the braid around the entire canvas.
Add faux stitching to a few sections to represent the traditional Kantha embroidery, using a white Neocolor II crayon.
Color brings me joy, and this definitely drew me to India! I am so happy to share my first art interpretation of my trip with you!
The colours are amazing. It does look like something you got from India. Great job! Mona http://www.artbymona.ca
