SUPPLIES

Americana Decor Color Stain®

  • Black (ADCS01)

Americana Decor® Chalky Finish™ Paint

  • Lace (ADC02)
  • Vintage (ADC17)

Americana Decor® Crème Waxes

  • Clear (ADM01)

Other supplies

  • sandpaper
  • pencil
  • saw
  • wood glue
  • coat hooks
  • jigsaw
  • Kreg Jig
  • pocket screws (1-1/4")
  • wood boards (1" x 4" and 1" x 6")
  • measuring tape
  • drill and drill bits

INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE: Let dry completely between painting steps.

  1. Cut out 1" x 4" and 1" x 6" boards using the following whale pattern. Lay out the wood boards according to the pattern.

  2. With a pencil, draw a similar whale onto the wood boards from the previous step. (Or make up your own pattern.)
  3. Drill pocket holes on the back of the wood. (Be careful to align each pocket hole so that it matches a part of the wood that will not be cut away.)

  4. Assemble the whale using 1-1/4" pocket screws. DO NOT USE GLUE.
  5. Cut along the pencil line on the assembled boards using a jigsaw or scroll saw to reveal the whale shape that you drew.

  6. Disassemble the whale by removing the pocket screws. Sand all edges of the wood so that they are smooth.
  7. Stain all visible portions of the whale in Black Color Stain (or other desired color) and let dry.

  8. Once dry, paint all the 1"x 6" boards using Lace. Set aside and let dry.
  9. Paint all the 1" x 4" boards using Vintage. Let dry.

  10. Sand the painted wood to let the stain below show through.

  11. Reassemble the whale. This time, use glue if desired.

  12. Apply a desired wax or varnish. (Shown: Clear Crème Wax)
  13. Mark and pre-drill holes for the coat rack hooks. Attach the coat rack hooks.
