Brighten a summertime table with a refreshingly simple napkin holder made with MagiKote™ Styrofoam Coating.

SUPPLIES

    • sandpaper
    • #3 round brush
    • toothpicks
    • #12 flat brush
    • white craft glue
    • clay tool or similar
    • knife or Styrofoam cutting tool
    • 3-1/2" x 4-7/8" Styrofoam egg
    • 1" thick Styrofoam sheet, cut 3" long x 1.5" wide

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Cut the egg in half lengthwise and then cut 1" off the fat end of the egg. Sand down all cuts, smoothing out the egg. Using clay tool (or similar), slightly indent horizontal lines across the egg's surface to simulate the skin of a watermelon.
    2. Sand a 3" x 1.5" piece of 1" thick of Styrofoam, creating a slightly round dip in the center. (Refer to photo.)
    3. Sand all pieces and assemble the watermelon. To assemble, use toothpicks that have been dipped first in white craft glue and then pushed through both pieces of Styrofoam where they are to be joined. (Refer to photo.)
    4. Apply two or three coats of MagiKote to the entire project with a #3 round brush, allowing drying time between coats. Sand as necessary to keep it smooth. (You can use hairdryer set on low temperature to speed things up, if desired.)
    5. Using a #12 flat brush, paint the inner portion of watermelon Geranium Red. When dry, paint the seeds Wrought Iron Black and then dot with Cloud White.
    6. Using a #12 flat brush, paint the rind Bright Lime Green.
    7. Using a #12 flat brush, paint the entire outer watermelon Festive Green. Let dry and randomly slap highlights of Bright Lime Green on outer watermelon to add more depth. (Refer to photo.)
    8. Seal the entire project with Americana Gloss Spray Sealer to protect it.
