Other supplies

  • sandpaper (fine-grit)
  • ruler
  • hot glue gun (with clear glue sticks)
  • X-Acto® knife
  • 3/4" oval brush
  • wooden heart shape (approximately 3"-4")
  • papier mâché shape (cones: 2 large; 2 medium)
  • pencil
  • scrap paper (or newsprint)
  • cardstock (or watercolor paper)
  • small jars (or cups)

  1. Gather the materials. You will need four of each: papier mache cones, wooden hearts, and small glass jars for flowers. (These will be unseen, so they don't have to match, just be able to hold water and flowers. Also, they should be small enough to fit into the cones once cut.)
    Step 0 Example
  2. Measure the cones for cutting: On one side, measure 1" less than the opposing side and draw an oval around the cone. (This will give the cone a slanted top.) Cut off the top of the cone with an X-Acto knife and sand to smooth the edge. (My cones were two different sizes. The smaller ones measured 6.5"/5.5" and the larger one measured 8"/7".)
    Step 1 Example
  3. Basecoat the cones and wooden hearts: Paint two cones and two hearts with Bubblegum Pink. Paint the other two cones and two hearts in Santa Red. Allow to dry. Lightly sand all the surfaces. Wipe clean. Paint the inside of each cone with 24K Gold Extreme Sheen. Allow to dry completely.
    Step 2 Example
  4. On the Bubblegum Pink hearts and cones, paint with Pink Silk, using a soft oval brush. Paint the Santa cones and hearts with Red Silk, using a clean oval brush. Allow to dry.
    Step 3 Example
  5. Paint the edges of the wooden hearts with 24K Gold. Allow to dry.
    Step 4 Example
  6. Add additional coats of the Pink and Red Silk paints and the 24K Gold for complete coverage, if needed. Allow to dry.
    Step 5 Example
  7. With a piece of crumbled paper or newsprint, buff the Silk paints to bring out even more of the beautiful gold sheen of the paint.
    Step 6 Example
  8. To prep for the letters "XOXO", paint a piece of stiff paper (like cardstock or watercolor paper) with 24K Gold. Allow to dry and apply a second coat as needed for complete coverage. Allow to dry. (TIP: Make your final brush-strokes in the same direction when using metallic paints.) Print out the provided pattern and cut out. Trace onto the gold painted stiff paper and cut out. Attach the letters to the hearts using Matte Decou-Page just on the back side. Press firmly and allow to dry.
    Step 7 Example
  9. Hot glue the hearts to the cones, attaching the Bubblegum Pink hearts to Santa Red cones and the Santa Red hearts to the Bubblepunk cones. (Alternate the colors for visual interest.)
    Step 8 Example
  10. Using the handle end of a paintbrush, dab on dots of 24K Gold to the cones starting at the lip and the bottom edge working your way toward the middle. (Do as many as you wish for your desired effect.)
    Step 9 Example
  11. This project is perfect for a Valentine's Day table or mantle display with flowers.
