  • cord (for banner string)
  • ribbon (black polka-dots and red polka-dots)
  • printed images (font of choice)

NOTE: Let dry completely between painting steps.

  1. Transfer the banner pattern to the watercolor paper. Cut out.
  2. Paint three banners in Prussian Blue. Begin with a wash and use a paper towel to wipe back and create texture. Go in again with solid Prussian Blue, wiping back if too much is applied.
  3. Repeat with the two red banners using Primary Red as a wash and Deep Burgundy and Napa Red for the darker areas. (Be sure to have an uneven coating on the Primary Red and Prussian Blue banners.) Let dry. Run through the embossing machine. With a fan brush, run Prussian Blue over the raised edges lightly on the Prussian Blue banners and Deep Burgundy on the Primary Red banners.
  4. Cut five 2.5" x 5" strips of watercolor paper. Paint three Primary Red/Deep Burgundy/Napa Red and two Prussian Blue in the same style as in the previous step. Let dry. Run through the embossing folder.
  5. Cut a piece of white tulle to the width of the banner. Fold into three pieces, slightly larger than the width of the paper strips in the previous step. Fold over to back and glue with craft glue.
  6. Glue the Primary Red strips on the Prussian Blue banners and Prussian Blue strips on the Primary Red banners.
  7. Transfer the larger circle pattern onto watercolor paper three times and cut out. Paint the outside edge in Neutral Grey. Let dry. Once dried, use a clean cloth to apply Silver Spark over Neutral Grey. Once dried, use scissors to cut fringe on outside edge.
  8. Transfer the smaller circle pattern onto watercolor paper three times and cut out. Print and cut out USA in a font of your choice and glue onto surface.
  9. Transfer the star pattern two times onto watercolor paper. Paint the stars Neutral Grey. Let dry. Once dried, use the same cloth from step 7 and apply Silver Spark.
  10. Cut a piece of ribbon to size. Glue to the front of the lettered banner and wrap around the back to glue the ends. Glue the smaller circle to larger circle. Glue circles to the banner.
  11. Glue the banners approximately 2" apart onto the cord using the paper on top of the cord to help hold it.
  12. Cut small strips of blue sparkled and white tulle and red ribbon. Tie the strips on the ends and between the banners.

It is best to run paper through the Spellbinders machine after it has been painted. If embossed before painting, it is optional to run through machine again to raise embossed edges.
