  • palette or plastic plate
  • paper towels
  • canvas (4" x 6"; 3)
  • paintbrushes (including fine liner brush)


  1. Mix French Mauve, Williamsburg Blue, and Blue Mist with Snow White to make pastel versions of each. Paint each canvas in one of these colors. Use the original color of each to paint the edge and feather it toward the front panel. (See photo.)

  2. Water down Desert Cactus, Aloe, Wild Orchid, Frosted Plum, Persimmon, and Williamsburg Blue on a palette. Soak a brush in each watercolor and press it against the middle area of the canvas (leaving a border around each one) and allow the paint to drip down. Tilt and angle the canvas to move the drips around.

  3. Go back in on each dripped color and darken them to full opacity with the corresponding color.

  4. Use a fine liner brush and Lamp Black to outline the drips and add embellishments such as swirls, triangles, stripes, circles, bubbles, and blobs.
