"Tess and Teddy" Mixed Media Wood Canvas

Create a colorful and unique mixed media art piece entitled "Tess and Teddy".

SUPPLIES

    • palette or plastic plate
    • paper towels
    • tracing paper
    • transfer paper
    • scissors
    • pencil
    • liner brush
    • 3/4" flat brush
    • #8 round brush
    • cosmetic sponge
    • plain white copy paper
    • brayer
    • 12" x 12" basswood canvas
    • oil pastels
    • scrapbook paper
    • photo-copied burlap

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Squirt a bit of these colors onto the basswood canvas: Cobalt Teal Hue, Pyrrole Orange, Quinacridone Magenta, and Yellow Oxide. (You can always add more if needed.)

    3. Use a brayer to smooth the paint over the surface in a vertical direction.

    5. Squirt a bit of these colors onto the scrapbook paper: Cobalt Teal Hue, Green Gold, and Yellow Oxide.

    7. Use a brayer to smooth the paint over the scrapbook paper in a horizontal direction.

    9. Use a pencil and the tracing and transfer papers to trace the couch pattern onto the painted scrapbook paper. Cut out both pieces with scissors. Using a 3/4" flat brush, adhere to the canvas with Matte Medium.

    11. Use a #8 round brush to paint the perimeter of the couch in Cobalt Teal Hue.

    13. Use a liner brush to add details in Dioxazine Purple to the couch frame. Use a cosmetic sponge and the Americana Inspiration Stencil to add words to the right side of the canvas and use the Americana Loopy Stencil on both the right and left sides, all in Dioxazine Purple.

    15. Use the pattern to trace girl's top, sleeves, and bottom onto the scrapbook paper. Using a #8 round brush, dipped into water, to paint over the top and sleeves in Yellow Oxide. Rinse brush; dip into water; and paint over the bottom in Quinacridone Magenta. Using a pencil and the tracing and transfer papers, trace the face pattern onto a piece of plain white paper. Using a #8 round brush, paint the face Titan Buff and the lips Quinacridone Magenta.

    17. Using a pencil and the tracing and transfer papers, trace the bear pattern onto the photo-copied burlap. Cut out bear, and, using a #8 round brush, adhere it into place with Matte Medium. Using a #8 round brush, paint the girl's hair Quinacridone Magenta. While it's still wet, move on to the next step.

    19. While her hair is still wet and without cleaning the brush, add highlights in Titanium White. Using a liner brush, add details to the teddy bear in Burnt Umber.

    21. Using a cosmetic sponge, randomly stencil dots from the Americana Gloss Enamels Stick-On Mod Stencil to the surface, in random contrasting colors. Use oil pastels in pinks to add rosy cheeks. Use oil pastels in browns to add detail to the face. Use oil pastels in coordinating colors to outline the girl, bear, and couch.
