Sunflowers in Fall Wall Canvas

A plump pumpkin and bright sunflowers grace a fall-themed wall canvas.
SUPPLIES
- water container
- palette or plastic plate
- paper towels
- tracing paper
- transfer paper
- ruler
- 2" flat brush
- #10 flat brush
- #12 flat brush
- 12" x 12" canvas
- #0 flat brush
- palette knife
- #16 flat brush
- 1/2" stencil brush
- 3/8" square stencil
- brown fine-tip permanent marker
INSTRUCTIONS
- Add Dimensional Effects to the canvas with a palette knife. Let dry.
- Base the entire surface including the sides in Light Buttermilk. Let dry. Base again, if necessary.
- Transfer the pattern on with tracing and transfer papers, being sure to wrap the design around the sides. Use a ruler for the straight lines.
- Add additional Dimensional Effects to the pumpkin sections and sunflower petals.
- Base the wall in True Blue; the window frame in Raw Sienna; and the pumpkin and petals in Cadmium Yellow.
- Retrace the pumpkin lines, if necessary.
- Corner-load a flat brush with Cadmium Orange. Brush on, following the curves of the pumpkin. Allow the Cadmium Yellow to show through, especially near the center of each section.
- Shade the pumpkin with True Red; reinforce with Burnt Umber.
- Shade the window frame with Burnt Umber, then reinforce with Lamp Black.
- Stencil the checks for the tablecloth with a 3/8" square stencil and True Red, using a dry 1/2" stencil brush blotted well. Be sure to wrap around the sides.
- When dry, trace on the flower bud.
- The background color of the pitcher is Light Buttermilk. Corner-load a flat brush with Light French Blue. Blend on the palette or plastic plate. Paint, using long, vertical strokes, keeping them stronger at the bottom.
- Shade with Raw Sienna along the sides and under the leaves.
- Paint the pitcher stripes in True Red, being sure to keep the same curve. Reinforce the shade on the side and under the leaves with Burnt Umber.
- Add a “flip-flop” Snow White highlight down the center.
- Base the pumpkin stem in Raw Sienna. Wash on Antique Green. Shade with Burnt Umber. Add lines of Burnt Umber and Cadmium Yellow. Loosely outline the upper edge with Lamp Black.
- For the window, allowing the Light Buttermilk to show through in places, corner-load a flat brush in Light French Blue and pat on loosely and lightly. Be more solid near the pumpkin and behind the leaves.
- Add a touch of Snow White to the upper left window pane.
- Paint the leaves and calyxes of sunflowers Antique Green with tints of Cadmium Orange and highlights of Citron Green and Cadmium Yellow.
- Shade near the sunflower petals with Plantation Pine.
- The sunflower centers are patted on with Burnt Umber. Pat some Lamp Black as a shade near the bottom and add True Red to the left and Citron Green to the right.
- Base the sunflower petals in Cadmium Yellow. Add tints of Cadmium Orange and some Snow White highlights.
- Using a small round brush, paint twigs in Burnt Umber and Lamp Black.
- With a large flat brush, shade under the pumpkin and pitcher with Burnt Umber.
- The brown permanent marker is used for all leaf line work. The sunflower petal outlines are a combination of marker and liner brush work, using Burnt Umber. (Refer to photo or use your own judgment.)
- Varnish with DuraClear Satin Varnish to protect the piece.
