SUPPLIES

    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate
    • paper towels
    • 1" flat brush
    • #8 flat brush
    • #12 flat brush
    • 3/8" angle brush
    • sponge dauber
    • stylus or ballpoint pen
    • canvas
    • cosmetic foam wedge
    • identi pen
    • hairdryer
    • graphite paper
    • liner brush

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Load a cosmetic foam wedge with Matte Medium and pounce off the excess onto the palette.
    2. Lay the Versatile Checks stencil on the canvas and pounce the sponge over the entire stencil.
    3. Lift and let dry. (You can use a hairdryer or heat tool to speed up the process.)
    4. Move the stencil down and repeat the process so that the pattern is over the entire canvas. Let dry.
    5. Instruction #4
    6. Load a damp 1" flat brush with Aqua Sky and paint the entire canvas.
    7. Instruction #5
    8. Immediately wipe off the paint with a paper towel using a circular motion. (Fold the paper towel often so that you are using a clean part of the towel. You can also use a baby wipe if you want to take off more of the color. The paint will stain the canvas and leave the stencil pattern in the background because of the Matte Medium acting as a resist.) Let dry.
    9. Instruction #6
    10. Load a brush with Canvas Gel and pull the flat of the brush up from the bottom of the canvas. Let completely dry.
    11. Using the graphite paper and a pen, transfer the pattern. (Carry the wavy lines over the edge of the canvas if desired.)
    12. Load a #12 flat brush with Bright Salmon to paint flowers. Wash brush.
    13. Instruction #9
    14. Load a #12 flat brush with Frosted Plum to paint flowers. Wash brush.
    15. Load a #12 flat brush with Colonial Blue to paint flowers. Wash brush.
    16. Instruction #11
    17. Work on one flower at a time and repeat the steps with the appropriate flower color.
    18. Load a #12 flat brush with one of the colors and then side-load one corner with Snow White.
    19. Stroke the brush in the same place on the palette to work Snow White into the brush; paint the second layer of petals on the flowers. (The brush is flat; the corner with Snow White is on the edge of the second petal and the other corner is near the center of the flower. Repeat for all of the flowers.)
    20. Instruction #14
    21. Load a #8 flat brush with Desert Cactus and Teal Mint; mix on the palette just a bit and then paint the stems.
    22. Load a small paint dauber with a mix of Chartreuse Yellow and Snow White; pounce a dot in the center of the flower. (Slightly push on the dauber and twist just a bit to make a nicely circled center.) Let dry.
    23. Load a #12 flat brush with a mix of Desert Cactus and Teal Mint and then side-load one corner with a touch of Chartreuse Yellow and Snow White.
    24. Instruction #17
    25. Stroke the flat of the brush in the same place on the palette to softly blend the colors that are on each corner. Paint the leaves, starting at the bottom with the brush at an angle; applying pressure; sliding the brush up; and finishing by sliding out of the stroke, one corner followed by the other corner of the brush.
    26. Repeat the stroke right next to the first to make the leaf a bit wider. Slide on the chisel edge of the brush up the stem a bit and into the leaf, stoping about 3/4 of the way in. Reload the brush as necessary. Let dry.
    27. Instruction #19
    28. Once everything has completely dried, outline the flowers, stems, and leaves with the Identi-pen. (If you don’t have an identi-pen, you can use a liner brush with inky Lamp Black. Inky simply means mixing water to the paint until you achieve an inky consistency.)
    29. Outline the outer petal and the next petal in, twice. (You’ll see this in the finished picture.) Don't worry if the lines go off the petal.
    30. For the inner petal that is just Snow White and the center, just outline the shape once. Add a small comma on the center pod followed by a small dot below that.
    31. Draw the stamens around the flower center by pulling lines and randomly dotting here and there.
    32. Outline the stems. Go up and down the right side of the stem two or three times to make it darker. (This will give the stem a bit of dimension.)
    33. Add small thorns on the sides of the stems. (Refer to photo.)
    34. Outline the leaves and add a small curl at the ends.
    35. Outline the bottom side of the leaf twice, coming off the original outline just a bit. (Refer to photo.)
    36. Instruction #27
    37. Load a liner brush with water, Chartreuse Yellow, and Snow White; slightly mix on the palette.
    38. Run a liner brush down the left side of the stems in a couple of places.
    39. Swipe a finger down the wet paint to soften the look just a bit.
    40. Instruction #30
    41. Load a liner brush with inky Teal Mint and paint a small line on the bottom of the leaves. Rinse brush. Load with Snow White and paint a small line followed by a dot on the tops of the leaves. (Refer to photo.)
    42. Load a liner brush with inky Snow White and paint a small comma stroke next to the black comma stroke on the flower centers.
    43. Load a #8 flat brush with water and then load with White Frost. Press on the corner of the brush, push, pull, and lift to paint the dragonfly wings.
    44. Load a #8 flat brush with Desert Cactus and Teal Mint; mix on the palette. Paint the head and sections of the dragonfly.
    45. Load a liner brush with Chartreuse Yellow and Snow White; use to paint the top of the head and each section on the body. Lightly touch with a finger to soften the color.
    46. Load a liner brush with inky Teal Mint and paint a small accent line on the back of the head and back of each section of the body. Add a small accent line to the bottom of each wing. Let dry.
    47. Once the dragonfly is completely dry, outline with the identi-pen.
    48. Side-load the toe of a slightly damp 3/8” angle brush with Colonial Blue; shade underneath the wings.
    49. Instruction #38
    50. Load a liner brush with inky paint color of choice and sign your art. Let dry.
    51. Once everything is completely dry, varnish the entire project with Soft-Touch Varnish.
