  • wooden skewer

INSTRUCTIONS

NOTES:

If you prefer, use a sign rather than the wood board, just paint it first with a light color.

  1. Find a piece of raw wood to work on. (Any size, your preference.)
  2. Instruction #1
  3. Lightly sand and seal the wood surface with Gloss Decou-Page. (TIP: Any clear varnish or other type of Decou-Page will work as well.) Allow to dry. If needed, lightly sand again.
  4. Instruction #2
  5. Cut out a heart to trace onto the board.
  6. Instruction #3
  7. Tape off the raw edges of the board with masking tape.
  8. Instruction #4
  9. With a flat brush, paint one brush-stroke of Burnt Sienna onto the board.
  10. Instruction #5
  11. With a wooden skewer or toothpick, scrape lines into the wet paint. (This sgraffito technique will give you the "wood" look.)
  12. Instruction #6
  13. Continue to work in sections until you cover the board. (Leaving out the heart shape gives the board the look of a heart carved in the wood.) Allow to dry.
  14. Instruction #7
  15. Remove the masking tape.
  16. Instruction #8
  17. Using a liner brush, paint initials into the heart. Allow to dry. Add any embellishments that you want to personalize.
  18. Instruction #9
  19. The board makes an easy DIY to give as an anniversary gift or to any loved one.
