Sewing Supply Storage Jars

The lidded jar not only stores thread, but its top is also a convenient pincushion.
SUPPLIES
- water container
- palette or plastic plate
- paper towels
- rubbing alcohol
- scissors
- fabric of choice
- 1/4" rake brush
- paper
- #12 flat brush
- cosmetic sponge
- pint-size and quart-size Mason jars
- painter's or masking tape
- low temp-hot glue gun and glue sticks
- quilt batting
- #10/0 liner brush
INSTRUCTIONS
NOTES:
Allow to dry between painting steps.
Wash jars in warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry well before painting. Or clean glass surfaces with rubbing alcohol and let dry.
- THREAD JAR: Tape the spool pattern inside the jar with painter's or masking tape.
- Use a #12 flat brush to paint the thread area Calypso Blue.
- Use a #10/0 liner brush to paint the spool rims Tuscan Red.
- Paint the spool top Bright Orange.
- Use a 1/4" rake brush and White to lightly add highlight on the thread.
- Use a 1/4" rake brush and Black to lightly shade one side of the thread.
- Use a #10/0 liner brush and Black to outline all and add a hole on the spool top.
- Use a #12 flat brush and Tuscan Red to paint the metal ring.
- Fold the quilt batting to form a thick layer. Use scissors to cut out a circle using jar lid as template.
- Cut the circle of fabric 2” larger than lid.
- Place the batting on the lid. Position the fabric over the batting. Fold the fabric edges under the lid and secure with glue.
- Position the ring over the lid forming a pincushion.
- Screw the ring onto the jar.
- BUTTON JAR: Cut a 1-1/4” circle from one small piece of paper and a 3/4” circle from another. Use the paper as a stencil.
- Position the largest “stencil” on the jar. Use a cosmetic sponge to tap White into the opening. Lift and repeat randomly on the jar.
- Use a #12 flat brush to paint circles Calypso Blue, Bright Orange, Festive Green, and Tuscan Red.
- Center the smaller circle “stencil” onto the larger circles. Add a small amount of Black to paint colors from step 16 and lightly tap the color on one side of each circle to shade.
- Use a #10/0 liner brush and Black to outline all buttons.
- Use a #10/0 liner brush and White to highlight the buttons.
- Use a #12 flat brush and Calypso Blue to paint the lid and ring.
- Use the handle end of a paintbrush and Black to create buttonholes on the jar and lid buttons.
