Other supplies

  • water container
  • palette or plastic plate
  • paper towels
  • rubbing alcohol
  • scissors
  • fabric of choice
  • 1/4" rake brush
  • paper
  • #12 flat brush
  • cosmetic sponge
  • pint-size and quart-size Mason jars
  • painter's or masking tape
  • low temp-hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • quilt batting
  • #10/0 liner brush

INSTRUCTIONS

NOTES: Allow to dry between painting steps. Wash jars in warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry well before painting. Or clean glass surfaces with rubbing alcohol and let dry.

  1. THREAD JAR: Tape the spool pattern inside the jar with painter's or masking tape.
  2. Use a #12 flat brush to paint the thread area Calypso Blue.
  3. Use a #10/0 liner brush to paint the spool rims Tuscan Red.
  4. Paint the spool top Bright Orange.
  5. Use a 1/4" rake brush and White to lightly add highlight on the thread.
  6. Use a 1/4" rake brush and Black to lightly shade one side of the thread.
  7. Use a #10/0 liner brush and Black to outline all and add a hole on the spool top.
  8. Use a #12 flat brush and Tuscan Red to paint the metal ring.
  9. Fold the quilt batting to form a thick layer. Use scissors to cut out a circle using jar lid as template.
  10. Cut the circle of fabric 2” larger than lid.
  11. Place the batting on the lid. Position the fabric over the batting. Fold the fabric edges under the lid and secure with glue.
  12. Position the ring over the lid forming a pincushion.
  13. Screw the ring onto the jar.
  14. BUTTON JAR: Cut a 1-1/4” circle from one small piece of paper and a 3/4” circle from another. Use the paper as a stencil.
  15. Position the largest “stencil” on the jar. Use a cosmetic sponge to tap White into the opening. Lift and repeat randomly on the jar.
  16. Use a #12 flat brush to paint circles Calypso Blue, Bright Orange, Festive Green, and Tuscan Red.
  17. Center the smaller circle “stencil” onto the larger circles. Add a small amount of Black to paint colors from step 16 and lightly tap the color on one side of each circle to shade.
  18. Use a #10/0 liner brush and Black to outline all buttons.
  19. Use a #10/0 liner brush and White to highlight the buttons.
  20. Use a #12 flat brush and Calypso Blue to paint the lid and ring.
  21. Use the handle end of a paintbrush and Black to create buttonholes on the jar and lid buttons.

HELPFUL HINTS

For added durability and to make dishwasher safe, let dry/cure jar for four days. Bake in oven at 325 degrees for 30 minutes.
