Mermaid Birthday Centerpiece

Add a mystical and nautical touch to a little girl's birthday party with this seaworthy accent.

SUPPLIES

    • palette or plastic plate
    • tracing paper
    • scissors
    • pencil
    • tape
    • hot glue gun and glue sticks
    • black permanent marker
    • 4-1/2" to 5" terra cotta pot
    • painter's or masking tape
    • white craft glue
    • sponge
    • small and medium brushes
    • bag of mixed assorted size shells
    • one piece of neon green foam
    • wooden garden stick with flat round shape at top
    • floral Styrofoam (to fit in pot)

    INSTRUCTIONS

    NOTES:

    Remove the product label from the terra cotta pot before beginning the project.

    1. Paint the bottom of the pot Indian Turquoise and the top, Light Buttermilk. Let dry and sponge Terra Coral over the Light Buttermilk top and use Light Buttermilk to sponge over the Indian Turquoise on the bottom.
    2. Paint the garden stick Indian Turquoise.
    3. When dry, shade the mermaid design area darkly on the back with a pencil, turn it around, and tape it down in place onto the wooden part of the garden stick. Trace it to transfer the design.
    4. Paint the mermaid tail Citron Green with Leaf Green accents; the bikini, Terra Coral; the body, Flesh Tone; and the hair, Terra Cotta.
    5. Paint the grass Leaf Green, and the bubbles, White. Let all dry.
    6. When dry, add the eyes, mouth, and belly button with a black permanent marker.
    7. Cut out a 6" circle from the green foam. Glue to the back of the wooden mermaid circle.
    8. Write "Happy Birthday" around the green foam circle with the permanent marker.
    9. Write the child's name on the edge of the pot with the permanent marker.
    10. Paint the child's age on the side of pot if desired.
    11. Glue in floral Styrofoam to the bottom of the pot leaving about 1" space to add shells.
    12. Glue garden stick to the center of the Styrofoam.
    13. Glue shells on top of the Styrofoam covering all of it.
