INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE: Let dry completely between painting steps.

  1. Cut three 1" x 8" boards in half. Line them up in a rectangle. (It should measure to roughly 48" x 45".)
    Step 0 Example
  2. Find the center of the boards by marking the halfway point in the middle board. Put a ribbon or jute, held by a push pin, at the marks.
    Step 1 Example
  3. Poke a hole in the other end of the ribbon or jute to fit for a pencil point.
    Step 2 Example
  4. Draw a circle by rotating the ribbon around the center push pin using the hole in the ribbon as a guide for the pencil.
    Step 3 Example
  5. Using a jigsaw, cut out the circle.
    Step 4 Example
  6. Distress the surface by taking some chunks of wood out of some of the edges with a putty knife. When distressed, sand the circle completely, removing any rough edges. Wipe dust away with a damp paper towel.
    Step 5 Example
  7. Stain the wood circle according to stain package instructions. Be sure to get on the sides and between each board.
  8. Once the stain is completely dry, apply a semi-thin layer of Lace to all stained surfaces.
    Step 7 Example
  9. Cut out the number stenciling using a Silhouette machine and cardstock. (Yardstick will make a sturdy stencil.) Keep all parts of the stencil.
  10. Using the same string method as in step X, draw a faint circle in the middle of the clock. (This circle has about an 11" radius.)
    Step 9 Example
  11. Line up the Roman numerals on the clock in the desired positions.
    Step 10 Example
  12. Replace one Roman numeral at a time with the negative portion of the stencil. Paint the negative stencil using Carbon and a foam brush. Carefully remove the stencil while the paint is still wet.
    Step 11 Example
  13. Continue to paint, skipping every other number so that the stencil will not touch the wet paint from the previous number.
    Step 12 Example
  14. Print and cut out the clock marking stencils, two of the big marks and four of the small marks, from the provided pattern. Tear each stencil so they are each on their own sheet.
  15. Place the large clock marking stencils on the edge of each number. Paint using a foam brush and Carbon.
    Step 14 Example
  16. Repeat with the small clock markings.
  17. Continue each clock marking down the side of the clock by free-handing the markings with a brush.
    Step 16 Example
  18. Free-hand a small circle (meant for the clock hardware) in the center of the clock. (This circle is about 3" in diameter.) Let dry.
  19. Once all the paint is dry, distress each piece with sandpaper. Allow the stain to come through on some parts.
    Step 18 Example
  20. Wipe the stained wood with a damp paper towel or cloth.
    Step 19 Example
  21. Line up the clock and flip over. Drill pocket holes so that each piece of the clock connects to each other. (It is recommended to drill the holes in both directions so there is a strong joint.)
    Step 20 Example
  22. Using 1-1/4" pocket hole screws, attach the pieces. Be sure to line up each board as you go. Attach two D-ring hooks to the back for hanging.
  23. Optional: Seal the clock with Ultra-Matte Varnish.
