Create a stylish, noteworthy impression with this stenciled chalkboard with an antique key.

SUPPLIES

• water container
• palette or plastic plate
• paper towels
• sandpaper
• scissors
• 1/2" flat brush
• 1/4" flat brush
• chalk
• 1" painter's tape
• jute twine
• cosmetic sponge
• hammer
• square wooden plaque
• electric drill
• antique key
• cut tacks
• small drill bit

INSTRUCTIONS

NOTES:

Let dry completely between painting steps.

1. Paint the plaque with Black Tie on the front, sides, and back using the 1/2" flat brush.
2. With the same brush, paint the top of the plaque with Mushroom.
3. Paint the rim of the top of the plaque with Black Tie and the 1/4" flat brush.
4. Stencil parts of the Brocade Motif Stencil on the top of the plaque with the cosmetic sponge and Coffee Bean. (Lay it on there different ways to decide on placement or copy the photo.) Hold the stencil in place with painter's tape.
5. Sand lightly the plaque to distress.
6. Cover the painted plaque in two coats of Chalkboard Coating. Each layer should have the brushstrokes running an opposite direction, ie. one coat, vertical strokes; second coat, horizontal strokes. Let dry for 24 hours before use.
7. Hammer in two cut tacks near the bottom of the plaque to hold the chalk. (You can pre-drill holes if you are worried about cracking.)
8. Drill holes all the way through near the top of the plaque 1/4" from the edge.
9. Take a piece of jute; tie a knot on the end; and pull through the front of the plaque to the back. Bring the other end back through the front; slip on the key; and tie another knot to make it the desired length. Cut off the excess.
10. Use the side of a piece of chalk to rub over the chalkboard to condition. Erase it, and it's ready to use.
11. Hang and place a piece of chalk on the tacks.
