Posted by DecoArt on Sep 23rd 2015

No need for brushes to create this detailed mixed media canvas using household objects and DecoArt Media® Modeling Paste and Misters.

SUPPLIES

    • water container
    • paper towels
    • 12" x 12" canvas
    • cosmetic sponge
    • brayer or old credit card
    • drywall tape
    • palette knife
    • embellishments of choice
    • spray bottle
    • cardboard box

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Gather items from around the house that can be used to make an imprint: ie., plastic utensils, old thread spools, bobby pins, screwdrivers, caps, lids, etc.
    2. Instruction #1
    3. Spread a layer of White Modeling Paste on the canvas. Use a brayer or an old credit card to spread and level the Modeling Paste. (If desired, add texture in the Modeling Paste with the brayer.) Do not let dry; move onto the next step.
    4. Instruction #2
    5. Use the various items to make imprints in the surface. If you are unhappy with the look, use the brayer, old credit card, or palette knife to smooth it over and try again. (The Modeling Paste will have plenty of drying time to allow you to do this.)
    6. Instruction #3
    7. Hint: Drywall tape is great for making imprints and using as a stencil. Use the palette knife to press it into the Modeling Paste.
    8. Instruction #4
    9. After the Modeling Paste is dry, mist the canvas with Primary Magenta, Orange, and Primary Yellow, moving onto the next step before they dry.
    10. Instruction #5
    11. Place the canvas upright. (Use a cardboard box lined with paper towels; this way all of the drips go into the box with little clean-up.) Give the canvas a few sprays of water from a spray bottle and let the colors run together naturally.
    12. Instruction #6
    13. Before the canvas dries completely, use a cosmetic sponge to spread some of the color on the sides of the canvas and any areas that might have been missed with the Misters.
    14. Instruction #7
    15. See image below for example of textures.
