Night Sky Chalkboard Message Center

Clear Chalkboard Coating turns a basswood canvas into a homey message center for a child's room.
SUPPLIES
- water container
- palette or plastic plate
- paper towels
- tracing paper
- transfer paper
- pencil
- #3 round brush
- 3/4" flat brush
- #2 liner brush
- electric drill
- small drill bit
- 20" piece of wire
- small wire tool
- 8" x 8" basswood canvas
INSTRUCTIONS
NOTES:
Let dry completely between painting steps.
- Transfer the pattern to the basswood canvas using tracing and transfer papers and a pencil.
- Mix (1) part Snow White, (1) part Lamp Black, and (5) parts Dioxazine Purple. Paint the background with the mixture and the 3/4" flat brush. Save this mixture for a later step.
- Paint the edge of the canvas and the sides with Sour Apple and the 3/4" flat brush. Paint the tree top Sour Apple with the #3 round brush.
- Using the #3 round brush, paint stripes around the edge of the canvas front with a 1:1 mixture of Snow White and Sour Apple.
- Paint polka dots around the edges with the same brush and the Snow White/Sour Apple mixture.
- Use the #2 liner brush and Sea Breeze to paint around the edge of the dark purple background.
- Using the #3 round brush, fill in the colors on the house. The roof stripes are Autumn Red and Jack-O'-Lantern Orange; door, Jack-O'-Lantern Orange; and house, Sea Breeze. Paint the polka dots on the treetop with Sea Breeze.
- Mix a little of the dark purple mixture from step 2 and a touch of Snow White to paint the stars using the #2 liner brush. Paint the windows of the house with this mix and the #3 round brush. Save this lighter purple mix.
- Using the #3 round brush and Sable Brown, fill in the tree trunk.
- Use Lamp Black and the #2 liner brush to outline the house and tree. (Refer to photo.)
- Use the #2 liner brush and the lighter purple mix from step 8 to outline the house and tree. (Refer to photo.)
- Using the 3/4" flat brush, apply the Clear Chalkboard Coating in one direction to the front of the basswood canvas. Let dry and apply another coat with the brushstrokes running in the other direction.
- Cure 24 hours and rub chalk lightly over the top surface to condition.
- Drill holes in the top edge of the basswood frame: 1" from the side and 1/4" from the back on each side.
- Hold the wire tightly with the wire tool and make a loop 2" from the ends. Wrap the entire wire around a pencil, shaping it with your hands to be a rounded arc. Push the wire ends through the holes in the frame. (The wire will stop where the loops are.) Make a loop on the ends of the wire to hold it in place with the wire tool.
