Other supplies

  • water container
  • palette or plastic plate
  • paper towels
  • rubbing alcohol
  • scissors (optional)
  • tape (masking tape or painter's tape - the width will be the width of stripes on mirror)
  • hot glue gun
  • 3/4" flat brush
  • #8 round brush
  • #8 flat brush
  • scrapbook paper (1 piece; Halloween colors)
  • white pencil (optional)
  • cosmetic sponges
  • found objects (round for monocle)
  • ornate mirror (new or flea market find)
  • half foam pumpkin (black) (Michaels)
  • mini boa (or fur in any Halloween color)

NOTE: Let dry completely between painting steps.

  1. Remove the mirror from its frame. Use a paper towel and rubbing alcohol to wipe the frame clean.
    Step 0 Example
  2. Use a 3/4" flat brush to paint the frame with two coats of Black Tie.
    Step 1 Example
  3. Place the tape diagonally on the mirror. Use a cosmetic sponge to dab on Pumpkin Patch. (Do this loosely, intentionally missing spots.) Wait approximately 15 minutes and scratch parts of the paint off with the handle end of a #8 round brush. (See scratches in image below.) Let dry.
    Step 2 Example
  4. Once dry, secure the mirror to the frame. (See photo: the stripes are not crisp, but rather scratched-up and worn-looking.)
    Step 3 Example
  5. Use the pattern as a reference or cut out the elements and use a white pencil to outline them on the half pumpkin. Paint the eyes with two coats of School Bus and the nose with two coats of Pumpkin Patch.
    Step 4 Example
  6. Using a #8 round brush, outline the face with Battleship; fill in using a 3/4" flat brush.
    Step 5 Example
  7. Using a #8 round brush, add the remaining details to the face. Paint the mouth in School Bus; and the eye details in Black Tie. Paint the lashes, cheek accents, and whiskers in White Birch.
    Step 6 Example
  8. Roll up the scrapbook paper into a cone shape, leaving a little hole at the top. Secure with hot glue and trim the bottom to fit on top of the pumpkin/cat's head. Add hot glue to the top of the cone and push the mini boa (or fur piece) through the top. Use hot glue to secure the cone (hat) with hot glue and add mini boa (or fur) around the bottom.
    Step 7 Example
  9. Repeat the cone shape for the ears. (This time, there is no need to leave a small hole at the top). Make ears using either black scrapbook paper or paper painted with Black Tie.
  10. Use a #8 flat brush and Black Tie and White Birch to paint checks around the "monocle" (a jar lid or other found object).
    Step 9 Example
  11. Use hot glue gun to secure the pumpkin cat to the mirror.
