INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE: Enlarge the pattern to fit the box surface.

  1. Base the entire box, top and bottom, with Colonial Blue. Apply a second coat if necessary. Let dry.
  2. Paint the background, on the top of the box, with Lamp Black. Soften around the edges by running a finger around the outside edge of the Lamp Black background. Let dry.
  3. Paint a narrow Lamp Black band at the bottom of the lid band. Let dry.
  4. Transfer all patterns onto the box, leaving off the small detail work.
  5. Using a liner brush and Lamp Black, paint the vine around the lid band. Let dry.
  6. With a small flat or filbert brush and Lamp Black, paint the leaves. Let dry.
  7. Base the heart with Antique Rose; shade with Deep Burgundy at the bottom point. Let dry.
  8. Highlight the round parts of the heart with a #20 flat brush and Bright Salmon.
  9. Line with a liner brush and Bright Salmon plus a tad of Warm White. Let dry.
  10. Flower #1 is based Warm White; the checks are Lamp Black. The finger-dot at the center is Bright Salmon.
  11. Flower #2 is based Aqua Sky. Let dry. The square center is Chartreuse Yellow. (This is a transparent color so it will take several coats.)
  12. The lines are Lamp Black with a Bright Salmon dot at the end.
  13. Flower #3 is Camel. Let dry. Add thinned Warm White dots with a liner brush. Let dry.
  14. The center is Deep Burgundy. (Again this is a transparent color so several coats will be needed.)
  15. Flower #4 is based in Blue Harbor. Let dry. The plaid is a very thin Aqua Sky. Let dry. Add a dot of Aqua Sky where each line crosses. Let dry.
  16. The center is a finger-dot of Aqua Sky. Let dry. The line around the center is Bright Salmon. Let dry. When dry, add Warm White dots on top of Bright Salmon.
  17. The center of the daisy is True Ochre. Let dry. Shade across the straight edge with Deep Burgundy.
  18. Highlight around the edge with Camel.
  19. The petals are Warm White created with the filbert brush.
  20. Add Lamp Black dots with a stylus around the center of the daisy.
  21. The petals of flower #5 are Frosted Plum, using the #4 flat brush.
  22. Shade next to the center with Lamp Black.
  23. Highlight the outside edge with a mix of Frosted Plum and Warm White. The center is a finger-dot of True Ochre. Let dry.
  24. Shade the bottom edge of the center of the flower with Deep Burgundy and highlight the other edge with Camel. Let dry.
  25. The dots around the center are Lamp Black using a stylus.
  26. Repeat the above instructions (Steps 21-25) on the second flower #5.
  27. The larger leaves are basecoated with Desert Cactus. Let dry.
  28. Shade with Plantation Pine. Let dry.
  29. Highlight with a mix of Desert Cactus plus a tad of Warm White. Let dry.
  30. The small leaves are basecoated with Foliage Green.
  31. Using a liner brush, paint in the stems and veins with Desert Cactus plus a tad of Warm White.
  32. Around the filler flowers are finger-dots of Warm White. Let dry. The center dots are True Ochre. Add stylus dots to fill in the spaces using Knockout Blue (Neon Lights). (FYI: with a black light, Knockout Blue will glow.)
  33. For the fine line pen work: Add stitch marks to the flowers, double lines around the heart, and lines in Warm White filler flowers. Add as much pen work as you like. Use the pattern and project photo as a guide. Let dry completely.
  34. After everything is completely dry, set the pen work with a spray of Matte Spray Finish. Let dry. Varnish with DuraClear Satin Varnish, giving it three coats and letting it dry between coats.

HELPFUL HINTS

Shade or highlight with a side-loaded flat brush of your choice.

Soften the shading and highlighting with the mop brush, while the paint is still wet. Always use a dry mop brush. Clean between colors with hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol.
