"Find Your Wings" Mixed Media Journal Covers

Spread your wings with a journal cover in mixed media and Americana® Acrylics.

SUPPLIES

    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate
    • paper towels
    • #6 flat brush
    • 1/4" flat brush
    • hot glue gun and glue sticks
    • assorted buttons
    • hole punch
    • #0 round brush
    • palette knife
    • tape
    • 1/2" stencil brush
    • Canson XL Mixed Media Journal
    • spray bottle
    • chipboard
    • chipboard shape
    • binder ring

    INSTRUCTIONS

    NOTES:

    Let dry completely between painting steps.

    1. Punch holes in the chipboard covers, about 1" from the top and bottom. (See photo.) Use a palette knife to spread White Gesso over the chipboard covers.

    3. Using a #6 flat brush, paint the chipboard with two coats of Desert Turquoise. Allow the paint to dry between coats.

    5. Using a stencil brush, dab on Festive Green through the butterfly on the DecoArt Personally Yours Urban Ink Spirited Stencil. Repeat the design over both of the covers.

    7. Use a #0 round brush to paint the tiny polka dots on both covers in Navy Blue.

    9. Use a palette knife to spread Black Modeling Paste through the "find your wings and fly" quote from the Urban Ink Spirited Stencil. Stencil the flying butterfly onto the back cover.

    11. Using Snow White and a 1/4" flat brush, paint a label on the back of the journal cover.

    13. Brush Americana Matte Decou-Page around the edges of both covers and sprinkle Gold Glamour Dust over the Decou-Page. Brush off the excess glitter.

    15. Place strips of newsprint decorative tape on both covers. (See photo.)

    17. Brush on a small amount of Mulberry onto the top edge of the covers.

    19. While the paint is still wet, mist it with water so that it runs down the chipboard covers.

    21. Paint the chipboard chevron strips with Teal.

    23. Using hot glue, adhere the chevrons and buttons onto the covers.

    25. Using the holes punched into the chipboard a guide, punch holes in the mixed media paper. Stack it between the two covers and completely by adding binder rings through the holes.
