Other supplies

  • water container
  • palette or plastic plate
  • paper towels
  • painter's tape
  • chalk pencil
  • #8 flat brush
  • white transfer paper
  • varnish
  • ruler
  • white frame sign w/stain (Hobby Lobby)


NOTE: This framed sign has been repurposed into a tray. Remove the hangers on the sign back before painting.

  1. Use a ruler to find the tray's center. Use a chalk pencil and ruler to make five equal-sized squares in the center section. Trace and transfer the provided design into each square.

  2. Use a flat brush and Lamp Black to paint alternating square backgrounds and designs. Paint the remaining squares and designs Snow (Titanium) White. When dry, paint the white areas with Snow White Pearl.

  3. Use painter's tape to mask off a border around the design.

  4. Paint the border Titanium White, then Snow White Pearl.
    Step 3 Example
  5. Use the same brush and Lamp Black to paint checks around the border.

  6. Remove the tape.
    Step 5 Example
  7. Seal with a varnish of your choice.


To achieve clean lines when using painter's tape, firmly run a fingernail or brush handle along the edges. This will help avoid the paint from seeping under the edge.
