Americana® Acrylics

  • Antique Gold (DAO9)
  • Avocado (DAO52)
  • Burnt Umber (DAO64)
  • Deep Burgundy (DA128)
  • Lavender (DAO34)
  • Sand (DAO4)
  • Spiced Pumpkin (DA310)

Other supplies

  • palette or plastic plate
  • paper towels
  • tracing paper
  • transfer paper
  • sandpaper
  • pencil
  • #3 round brush
  • 1/2" flat brush
  • #10/0 liner brush
  • wooden peg rack

INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE: Let dry completely between painting steps.

  1. Using the 1/2" flat brush and Antique Gold, paint the top surface of the peg rack.

  2. With Sand and the #3 round brush, add polka dots randomly to the top surface of the peg rack.

  3. With the 1/2" flat brush and Burnt Umber, paint the edge of the peg rack.

  4. Using sandpaper, distress the peg rack's painted areas to achieve an aged look.

  5. Use the pattern, tracing and transfer papers, and a pencil to add the trees and owls to the peg rack. (Owls are numbered 1 to 3 in the order they appear from left to right.)

  6. Using the #3 round brush and Spiced Pumpkin, fill in the parts you see in the picture.

  7. With Deep Burgundy and the #3 round brush, add the details you see below.

  8. Using Avocado and the #3 round brush, fill in the green parts. With the same brush, fill in the spaces with Lavender that you see in the photo.

  9. Add a little Sand to Avocado and make polka dots on the Avocado tree. Also add stripes to the belly of the first owl and dots to the belly of the second owl.
  10. Add a little Sand to Spiced Pumpkin and make polka dots on the orange tree with the #10/0 liner brush. With the same brush, make dots in the orange tree, wavy stripes on the third owl's belly, and lines on the second owl's wing.
  11. Add a little Sand to the Burnt Umber and using the #3 round brush, fill in the tree trunks.
  12. With the #10/0 liner brush, make decorations on the owls. Paint wavy Lavender lines on the first owl's wings. Add Sand and Deep Burgundy stripes on the second owl's wings. Using the same brush and Sand, fill in the eyes and beak of the first owl and make dots on the third owl's wings.
  13. With the #10/0 liner brush, outline the trees and owls with Burnt Umber. With Lavender, make little accent marks on the owls and trees. Do the same with Sand. (See photo.)
  14. Fill in all of the other details you see: Add a little Sand to Avocado and to Spiced Pumpkin and fill in the patterns you see below. (Polka dots on trees, patterns on owl bellies and wings...) Mix a little Sand with Burnt Umber and fill in the tree trunks with the #3 round brush.

  15. Paint the bottom portion of the pegs with Burnt Umber and the 1/2" flat brush. Using the #3 round brush, paint the tops of the pegs: first peg, Spiced Pumpkin; second, Deep Burgundy; third, Avocado; and fourth (last), Lavender.
  16. Using the #10/0 liner brush and Sand, freehand little scallops around the flat surface of the peg rack.
