Lightly sand the boards with 220-grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface. Wipe away any residual dust off the boards and work area.
Stain the boards using a cloth or staining sponge. Apply an even coat of stain onto the board; wait five minutes and then remove the excess stain with a cloth. Allow the stain to dry; apply a second coat if needed.
Paint the craft letters with Warm White. Let dry; lightly sand the letters to give them a distressed look.
Cut the 2” x 24” piece into two with a miter saw. (Note: This can be done in Home Depot free of charge.) Apply Gorilla Glue to the piece and place over the three stained boards; repeat on the right side with remaining piece.
Place a heavy object on top of 2” x 12” pieces to allow glue to properly bond to boards. Allow glue to dry for 24 hours.
Apply glue to the back of each letter and adhere to the front of the boards. Allow to dry completely.
HELPFUL HINTS
Using poplar boards makes this handmade sign lightweight and easy to move. Use hinges on the back to hang the sign or lean it against wall or shelf.
