Color of the Month: August - Yellow

The latest color of the month is the lovely and cheerful yellow! This primary color commonly represents sunshine, happiness, and hope; making it a perfect choice for the month of August! You can pair yellow with common fall colors such as rich reds, browns, and greens to add a little pop to your Autumn palette. Or if you're still holding on to Summer, (I know we are!) yellow works well alongside brilliant blues and pinks to conjure up memories of the seaside.

Yellow, red, and blue make up the three primary colors. Primary colors cannot be made through mixing other colors, and all other colors are derived from these three hues. Yellow is the most luminous of these colors, meaning even the deepest yellows never look truly "dark." Even when mixed with black yellow doesn't turn darker, but instead becomes green.

The color yellow has taken on several different meanings over the years. Yellow's association with the sun has associated it with warmth and life, but in the 17th century it was seen as a color of jealousy or envy, similar to how green is today. You've probably also heard the term "yellow-bellied" a phrase that rose to popularity in the 1920's that was primarily used by cowboys in the Wild West. It's believed that since "having guts" meant you were brave, having a "yellow belly" was a sign of false bravado. Even still, yellow has been featured prominently in art and fashion throughout history due to it's luxurious brightness.

Additionally, color psychologists believe the color yellow can stimulate our minds and aid mental agility and perception. Bright colors such as yellow are known for being energizing and attention-grabbing, which makes yellow accessories and furniture pieces ideal for livening up a room or outfit.

Yellow is currently trending in both fashion and home decor, with many claiming it to be the new "it" color for gen z similar to the very popular rose gold, or "millennial pink." We love how this rich hue turns anything into a statement piece! Bring new life to old furniture, brighten up a planter, or even give your front door a makeover. DecoArt has taken this sunny color and given it an updated pearl finish with new DecoArt® Pearls™ in Bright Yellow, available online and at select Hobby Lobby stores.
