This year's New Year's Eve celebrations are likely to look and feel very different. But, that doesn't mean you can't pull out the sequins and get fancy with your own festive celebration at home!
This year I thought it would be fun to create a fancy dinner party, for a small group of friends, with a luxe feel and all the sparkles. I actually think New Year's Eve is the best time to host a dinner party, as gathering at home with friends can be much more fun, relaxing, and affordable than going out on this busy night.
I decided to create my own luxe DIY wood painted placemats for our fancy dinner party. I love the rich and luxurious look of suede and thought it would be fun to try out the new DecoArt® Suede™ to create custom placemats for our celebration.
This lightly textured acrylic easily transforms your project with a subtle dimension that instantly summons memories of velvety, warm textures. It goes on like a dream and works great on surfaces like wood, walls, canvas, terra cotta pots, and unglazed ceramics. You can now find it at your local Joann stores, along with your other favorite DecoArt products.
Items needed:
- DecoArt Suede 2oz - Midnight Blue
- Dazzling Metallics 2oz - Glorious Gold
- Americana Acrylics 2oz - Snow (Titanium) White
- Unfinished wood piece
- Paint brushes
- Painter's tape
- 3.5" chipboard circles
- Vinyl clock SVG
Instructions:
Start by taping off the outer edges of your wooden board with the painter's tape.

Begin painting the board with the Suede paint. You will want to be sure that you paint using the cross-hatch technique. Starting at the bottom you will paint in a criss-cross like pattern which will help mimic the look of real suede

Continue painting the board from bottom to top using the cross-hatch technique. One of the great things about this product is the fantastic coverage it provides. After only 1 coat the unfinished wood was starting to look amazing.

It is crazy how a piece of wood can so easily be transformed to have the look and feel of luxurious suede!

Once the paint is dry you can move on to the edges of your placemat. I wanted my placemats to have a little sparkle and shine, after all, it is a New Year's Eve celebration. I used the Dazzling Metallics in gold to paint the outside edges of my placemat and love the instant glam effect it gives the boards.

Once the paint dries it's time to set the table with all your festive decor. I layered gold polka dot plates with a rich navy and gold dessert plate, which really pop on the DIY Wood Painted Placemat.

I painted chipboard circles white and then created a clock face with my Cricut. Not only do they add a festive touch to the place setting, but they can also serve as coasters too! Just be sure to seal them first with an acrylic sealer.

I'm excited about gathering around the table with a small group of friends for a fancy New Year's Eve Dinner. I love my new DIY wood painted placemats and think they add the perfect luxurious touch to the tablesetting. Let's kiss 2020 goodbye and get ready to create lots of shining moments and memories in 2021!
