Creepy Halloween Specimen Art

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays to decorate for and celebrate. Every room in the house gets a spooky makeover and all the skeletons come out of the closet. This year I'm adding this creepy Halloween specimen art to my spooky Halloween décor.

My son loves bugs and every time we've been in the Halloween section he manages to find all the creepy, crawly creatures to scare me with. I decided to turn those creepy little creatures into a work of art with the new DuraClear Iridescent Varnish

If you are looking to up the creepy factor in your Halloween décor, this is the perfect DIY that you can create in less than 30 minutes.

Items needed:

  • Americana DuraClear Varnishes 8oz - Iridescent Blue Varnish
  • Americana DuraClear Varnishes 8oz - Iridescent Turqiouse Varnish
  • Americana DuraClear Varnishes 8oz - Iridescent Violet Varnish
  • Americana Multi-Surface Satin Acrylics 8oz - Black Tie
  • Plastic bugs
  • Wood slices
  • Paintbrush

Instructions:

Start by painting your wood slices with black paint. I found the wood slices at the craft store and used three different sizes for my vignette.

Now it's time to paint your specimen. I found a large fly and a variety of other plastic bugs in the Halloween section. My bugs were already black, but if you find ones that aren't you will want to give them a quick coat of black paint so the Iridescent Varnish stands out.

Tape off the wings, or any other areas that you want to paint a different color.

Use the DuraClear Iridescent Violet Varnish to paint the body of your largest specimen.

Next, use the DuraClear Iridescent Turquoise Varnish to paint the eyes and wings.

Paint the remaining bugs with a variety of violet, turquoise and blue varnish.

Hot glue the bugs to the painted wood slice to create your creepy art.

Hang on the wall or group them together with moss, succulents and other bugs for a spooky table display.

We love our new Creepy Halloween Specimen Art and the iridescent shimmer that turns these ordinary bugs into an extraordinary Halloween decoration!
