DIY Stylish Colorful Desk Accessories

Cleaning off your desk is so therapeutic. Even if your to-do list is a yard long, an organized desk helps clear the mind, doesn’t it? But organized doesn’t mean it can’t be pretty and stylish, right?

So, in honor of National Clean Off Your Desk Day, I want to share an easy way to paint some stylish accessories to help organize your desk.

Items needed:

  • Americana Acrylics 2oz - Blush Pink
  • Americana Acrylics 2oz - Light Buttermilk
  • Americana Acrylics 2oz - Coral Blush
  • Americana Acrylics 2oz - Plum Suede
  • Americana Acrylics 2oz - Sea Breeze
  • DecoArt Extreme Sheen 2oz - Champagne Gold
  • Desk accessories
  • Painter's tape
  • Glitter (optional)

I happened to pick up this adorable notebook and loved the colors and patterns on the binding at the top. So, I decided to make that my paint style inspiration. You could paint anything you have around the house that will help corral your office supplies on your desk. I picked up an acrylic tray and a couple of wood card holders to display a calendar and a quote.

I wanted the top side of my acrylic tray to be smooth so I turned it over and taped off a diagonal pattern for painting. Then I added a gold dot pattern to the underside of the tray with DecoArt Extreme Sheen metallic paint.

Since the dots in my inspiration were irregular and heavy, I used the pad of my finger instead of a paint brush. To use this method, just dip the soft part of your finger into the paint and use a heavy, short swipe for your dots.

Then I set my tray aside to allow the dots to dry. Next, I used painter’s tape to create a diagonal pattern on my wood card holders. I used two different colors of Americana Acrylics on each holder.

Once the gold dot pattern on the acrylic tray is dry, select a lighter color to gently paint over the dots. Keep turning your tray over to make sure you achieve a solid coverage of paint. This will become the background color for the gold dots when you turn your tray over.

I painted a different color on each side of my tray and then added a little gold glitter to the wet paint so you couldn't see the outline of my dot pattern. I love how the colors pop through the top of the tray when I turn it over!

Once the card holders were dry, I added a few irregular gold dots with my finger again to match the tray pattern.

These card holders could be used in lots of ways. The larger one holds my calendar upright on my desk.

And, the smaller one is perfect for an inspiring quote that I printed off the computer. It would also be perfect for holding photographs or notes.

I love blending pretty pastel colors with metallic gold. Creating these stylish desk accessories inspired me to clean up my desktop. And, this pretty color combination makes me smile. Happy National Clean Off Your Desk Day!
