DIY Autumn Sign

Don’t you just love the look of hand painted signs? But think they look a little too hard to attempt yourself. Well, I’m here to show you how easy it is to make your own custom hand painted sign using some fabulous DecoArt products.

Items Needed:

  • Vinyl Stencil
  • Coarse Sandpaper
  • Chunky Wood

Instructions:

I used the DecoArt Patio Paint Outdoor for this project. I love the Decoart Patio Paint Outdoor because it holds up so well outside! It doesn’t crack or peel. You don’t need a sealer or any varnishing. It’s weather resistant, & it comes in so many fun colors! It’s just plain awesome!

First you will paint your board the color you want your letters to be. I wanted my letters to be dark brown so I used the DecoArt Patio Paint Outdoor in Woodland Brown for this step. Let your paint dry really well. I waited until the next day. Then you will apply your vinyl lettering on top. (If your paint isn’t thoroughly dried some paint might come off with your stencil later on. You don’t want that to happen! So make sure your paint is nice & dry!)

Then you will put a nice layer of the Americana Decoupage on top of the vinyl lettering with a foam brush. This will “seal” your vinyl lettering & prevent seepage of the contrasting paint color in just a bit.

I let the Decoupage dry, and then I put two layers of Patio Paint Outdoor in Cloud White on top of that.

Then I removed the vinyl lettering.

I love those clean lines!

I thought my sign needed a little bit of fall color so I used the Tiger Lily Orange & Sweet Pea Patio Paint Outdoor to paint the leaves on my sign.

I tried to add different strokes in different directions so my leaves wouldn’t look perfect! ;)

After the all the paint was completely dried I used some coarse sandpaper to go over the whole board to rough it up a little bit. :)

I love how it turned out! It adds the perfect fall touch to our front entry way.
