DIY Champagne Bottle Tops

DIY Champagne Bottle Tops

Posted by DecoArt on Feb 12th 2018

Hello again! For February’s craft, I wanted to do something intimate and playful at the same time.

I thought about painting champagne bottles on glasses, but then I remembered I had these giant galvanized bottle caps that I snagged at Michaels earlier in the summer. I had originally thought of using them to paint beer bottle caps for our outside bar as decor, but then it occurred to me that I could marry the champagne and the bottle caps idea, to paint the bottle caps from my favourite champagnes! Huzzah!

If you're curious as to what all the parts of a champagne's bottling are called, you can look that up // here //, but I basically I knew I didn't want to recreate the cage of the cork, so the caps would have to do. I also used my Cricut Explore Air 2 for this project, but you can just as easily paint the vinyl decal portion of this project.

Items Needed:

Instructions:

Start by painting the bottle caps in the Chalky Finish paint.

Instruction Image #1

Once you're comfortable with the base coat, paint one in each shade you've chosen. Because I wanted to recreate real brands, for the most part, I stuck to their branded colours. I used several coats to ensure thick and consistent coverage. I was looking for deep colours, and that's what I got!

Instruction Image #2

While the paint dries, use your Cricut Explore Air 2 to cut the following decals on vinyl. I opted for black and gold but could have easily done all of them in black. I've saved the files in Design Space for you // here //. If not, you can find the vectors online, print, and use them as stencils for the paint of your choice.

Don't forget to weed them properly once they're done being cut, and then use painter's tape to transfer the decals from the sheets to your bottle caps. I used painter's tape because I didn't want to lift the paint off the metal. Good call too!

You may have noticed there are little holes in the fluting of the bottle caps, where you can thread a ribbon, so I did just that! I have way too many ribbons to choose from, but I opted for branded colours to complete the look.

Voila! You can use them as bar cart decor, fun coffee table accessories, or as gifts for the bubbly lover in your life.

While this project is for champagne bottle tops, you could just as easily do it for your favourite beers, so don't be afraid to get creative!

That's all for me, and don't forget to check out the rest of my projects on the DecoArt blog.
