Be the Change Canvas

This canvas combines metallic paint with hot Indian Summer colours and an inspirational message. It uses simple stencilling and blending techniques with Media Fluid Acrylics. I hope you’ll be inspired to create your own motivational art. My top tip for this project is to mask out the areas of the stencils you don’t want with washi tape – this prevents paint getting where you don’t want it, and the washi peels off the stencils very easily and won’t damage them.

Items needed:

  • DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics - Hansa Yellow Medium
  • DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics - Primary Magenta
  • DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics - Titan Buff
  • DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics - Metallic Silver
  • DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics - Metallic Gold
  • DecoArt Media Mediums and Specialty Products - Gesso - White
  • DecoArt Media Mediums and Specialty Products - Gesso - Black
  • DecoArt Media Mediums and Specialty Products - Clear Matte Medium
  • DecoArt Media Varnishes - Gloss Varnish
  • Americana Stencils 6x8 - Pixelated
  • Americana Decor Stencils - Tribal Accents
  • Personally Yours - Urban Ink 6x9 - Beliefs
  • Assorted Brushes
  • Lotus mini stencil (That’s Crafty)
  • Buddha stamp (Inkylicious)
  • Versafine Ink
  • Stamping card
  • MDF board

Instructions:

Prep the MDF with white gesso. When dry, brayer (or paint) a mix of Metallic Silver and Metallic Gold paints onto the panel. The paints mix and create a lovely tarnished metal colour. Sponge some extra silver around the edges.

Stamp the image for placement and heat set well. (In the photos I’ve actually masked it out with a copy paper mask, but I wasn’t happy the black was bold enough in the end and added a second stamped image. If you plan to do the same, skip the mask).

Place the Tribal Accents stencil over the head centrally. Apply yellow paint all around the inside part, then apply magenta at the edges and blend the paints. I’ve found the best tool for stenciling with Fluid Acrylics is a foam applicator handle, preferably the small round ones. This is because the acrylics are very fluid and so have a tendency to seep under the stencil if you use a normal sponge or brush. I also prefer the smooth appearance to the textured effect you often get with a stencil brush.

Repeat the stenciling with the lotus flower. Add accent stenciling using the Pixelated stencil with Titan Buff and Black Gesso (these paints are thicker – you can use a cheaper sponge or a brush for these). (Can you tell I’m rather fond of the Pixelated stencil? He needs a good clean!)

Paint a sheet of card with gold paint mixed with a touch of silver. Stamp onto the card with the Buddha, heat set the ink and cut out.  Add some highlights with a very light wash of silver paint to the cheeks, forehead and nose. Glue in place with Matte Medium.

Stencil the wording in black gesso and ink the edges to tie the back into the whole composition. The outer edges of the board are also painted black. Protect the piece and make the colours pop with a coat of Gloss Varnish.

I really love how you have blended the vibrant colours and how you have cleverly placed the stencil to accentuate the centre image! It really is a beautiful piece of art Katy - just lovely!

Wow - so inspirational Katy. I haven't tried the foam applicator for stenciling DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics. Can't wait to try. Love the way you blended the colors! Xj.
