Summer wedding season is around the corner and I don't know about you, but I'm always looking for a way to set my gift apart from the others - especially if they had a giant registry. In the past, I've hidden things inside the gift box (think an extra gift card or a silly picture of us) but this year I'm going to try and do it with my wrapping skills alone.

I've painted wrapping paper before and it turned out beautifully. This past winter I painted a plaid paper for my gifts and loved how different it was from everything else under the tree when we went to visit friends and family. When I was looking at DecoArt's collection of paints for this project I was immediately drawn to their new Extreme Sheen collection; there's something fresh about the metallic and I like how they looked with my existing acrylic paints. I think I found a match made in heaven!

This project is super simple and requires a minimum of materials and time. You could even paint your paper the day before a wedding!

Items needed:

  • Americana Acrylics 2oz - Avocado Dip
  • Americana Acrylics 2oz - Saffron Yellow
  • Americana Acrylics 2oz - Cotton Candy
  • DecoArt Extreme Sheen 2oz - Rose Gold
  • DecoArt Extreme Sheen 2oz - Aquamarine
  • DecoArt Extreme Sheen 2oz - Sapphire
  • Blank wrapping paper or high quality craft paper (you don't want it to crease and pucker as it dries, so spring for the nice stuff or you'll be remembered for the wrong reason!)
  • Assorted Brushes
  • Scissors
  • Ribbons, pom poms, tassels etc. for wrapping

Gather your supplies.

This one is easy to forget when you're making your own wrapping paper, but measure out how much you need to cover your packages before you paint. If you determine the size of your sheet from the get-go, you won't waste your time painting something too small or too big.

Using a test sheet, try out your colour combinations and patterns. I always do this to avoid wasting paper, my time, and my paint. A quick test will save you some heartbreak later.

Group your colours: I did one sheet with Cotton Candy, Sapphire & Aquamarine. I did another with Avocado Dip, Saffron Yellow, Saphie & Aquamarine. I did my third sheet with Rose Gold, Aquamarine & Avocado Dip. I ensured there would be some colour crossover between the papers to make sure it all looked cohesive.

Get to work! For the pattern I kept it really simple with a series of Xs, Os, and dashes. It was the simplest pattern that could be repeated over the three colour groups.

For each sheet of wrapping paper, make sure your use of colour is consistent i.e all the Xs are sapphire while all the swirls are Cotton Candy etc. and then switch it up from sheet to sheet.

Wait about an hour for everything to be nice and dry. You don't want to accidentally transfer paint around your room while trying to wrap things! I used this time to fill in any "gaps" in the patterns on the sheets.

Once everything is dry, get to wrapping! In my case, the paper wasn't as opaque as normal, so I pre-wrapped some boxes to ensure that the Bride and Groom wouldn't be able to tell what was under the paper!

Time for ribbons and pom poms and bows!

When you get to set them out at the event you'll be the envy of the guests since your gifts will obviously look more chic than anyone else's.
