Neon Sugar Skull Canvas

Do you love decorating for Halloween and  Dia de Los Muertos and need an idea?  You have got to check out this Neon Sugar Skull Canvas.  It is easy to make with a stencil and Americana Neon Lights.  The neon paints really pops off of the canvas and looks like it is glowing.  This canvas is perfect to display on a mantel, shelf, or wall.

Items Needed:

  • Assorted Brushes
  • Canvas
  • Sugar Skull Vinyl Stencil

Instructions:

Start by gathering  your supplies.  I bought the 8 x 10 inches canvas at my local craft store.  I love the thick 3D look of the canvas and those metal studs are super cool for this project.

I started by painting the front of the canvas using Americana Neon Lights in Peach Punch.  My favorite color is coral and this color is so pretty.  I applied one thin coat of paint with a foam brush and let it dry.

Next, I made a vinyl stencil using my Silhouette Cameo.  I purchased the sugar skull image from the Silhouette design store and uploaded it to the studio.  I sized the sugar skull to fit on the canvas.  Then, the electronic cutting machine cut out the image on a piece of permanent Oracal 651 black vinyl.  Once the sugar skull was cut out, I removed the negative space using a weeding tool.

I painted the negative space in the stencil using American Neon Lights in Green Energy, Pink Explosion, Radiant Yellow and Knockout Blue.  I got some of the paint on the vinyl.  I let the paint completely dry, then I used my fingernail to gently scrape off the paint that was on the vinyl.

I left the sides of the canvas unpainted so you could see the studs, but you could always paint them.

I love how simple and easy this Neon Sugar Skull Canvas was to make.  The look is sleek and simple but the neon lights paints in the intricate design of the sugar skull really pops.
