Use DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics to create this Gothic Mirror Candle Holder to add to your home decor!

Items needed:

  • DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics - Quinacridone Gold
  • DecoArt Media Mediums and Specialty Products - Gesso - White
  • Americana DuraClear Varnishes 8oz - DuraClear Ultra Matte Varnish
  • Versamark Ink Pad
  • Stampendous Chunky Copper Embossing Powder
  • Paint Brush
  • Heat Gun

I picked up this wall hung candle holder with the mirror at a charity shop a little while back. It already had a white washed finish, so I decided to work straight over the surface without gesso. If you are not sure about how your substrate will accept different mediums, it's always good to give it a base coat of gesso.

I dismantled the candle holder.  It is just held in by one bolt so it’s easy to take apart.

Start by painting everything with Prussian Blue Hue. Make sure you work the paint into all the details and creases.

To bring out the detail, I used the dry brushing technique.

Dry brushing is great for picking out details and edges in 3D pieces.

The process is repeated a few times mixing lighter and lighter shades of the base colour, removing most of the paint from the brush till it's almost dry and only a small amount of paint is being left behind. 

It's important to use a light hand. Start by swiping/ flicking the paint brush back and forth, across the surface of your project and only use the very tips of the brush. It's a process that takes a bit of time to build up the colour and you will need to go back and add more paint to the brush and then remove most of it as before. 

To get my lighter shades, I added tiny amounts of Titanium White to the Prussian Blue finishing with a very light dry brushing of  Titanium White only. 

To get my finish I repeated the steps four times, getting lighter each time.

I could have left it here and added the Satin varnish for a clean and bright finish but I wanted to tone things down and age it a little.

To age things up, I added a watered down coat of Transparent Yellow Oxide to knock back the starkness.The lighter blues then changed to have a warm greenish tint.

To age things a little more, I added some neat Quinacridone Gold to the low areas. I have added a couple of coats hear to really build up the richness, I have also added a little Quinacridone Gold to a few spots around the piece, edges,corners etc.

To bring out the detail even more, I decided to add some of Stampendous’s chunky copper embossing powder.  The metallic adds a nice contrast to the grungy blues as well as additional texture. 

Using a Versamark ink pad, just swipe areas of the piece at random making sure you pic out areas with detail. 

Apply pinches of powder and remove the lose excess before heat setting. 

The media fluids actually stand up really well to the heat gun when setting the powders but they can and will bubble if you over heat an area too intensely. Just work carefully. If there is a little bubbling don't worry too much, it adds to the aged effect and once varnished shouldn't be a problem.

Once everything is fully dry finish with a couple of light coats of Decoart Satin Varnish.

The candle holder was already finished in black, so to give a rusty hue, I stippled several layers of Quinacridone Gold with a stiff bristled brush allowing each coat to dry first. Stippling gives a nice speckled effect that looks more natural than using brush strokes. 

Finally finish with a coat of Decoart Matte Medium.

What a fabulous upcycle! The green hues that come through after yellow is added absolutely bring it to another level. As does the gold & embossing. The grunge, rusty look would be perfect for when I move to France (possibly a deluded dream, lol). I see rustic French style here. Beautiful. I even understood every decoart product, most unusual for me! Tfs. C
