INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Sand the frame to remove the shine. Wipe off any dust with a clean, dry cloth; sponge on Calypso Blue with a cosmetic or art sponge. (No need to cover it completely; use just one coat.) After it dries, sponge White around the outside edge and across the bottom and use to paint dots. Set aside to dry.
  2. Clean the frame's glass with mild soap and water. Dry with paper towels.
  3. Apply three layers of Contac paper to the glass in the frame. (This will make it thick and easier to peel off.)
  4. Trace the basic pattern lines onto the tracing paper. Place the tracing on the Contac paper and trace the opening (where the picture will go). Place the glass onto the line drawing to see where to put the Contac paper. Peel off the Contac paper's backing and place the Contac paper on the glass. (Be sure the edges are sealed to prevent paint from running under the Contac paper.)
  5. Use a sponge applicator to sponge on Light Buttermilk over the glass. Let dry. When sponging on the second coat, pick up Calypso Blue and sponge in the sky area, getting lighter as you go down. Let dry.
  6. Trace the basic pattern lines onto the glass with grey graphite paper.
  7. Basecoat snowman's face with Light Buttermilk. Shade at the base of the twigs and at the bottom of the face with Burnt Umber.
  8. Stipple in the cheeks with Razzle Berry.
  9. Paint the eyes with Black. Let dry.
  10. Highlight the eyes and then dot with White.
  11. Use a 20/0 script liner brush to paint pine on the twigs with layers: first, Hauser Medium Green; second, Festive Green; third, Citron Green; and finally, highlight with White.
  12. Basecoat the nose with several coats of Bright Orange. Shade with Burnt Umber. Highlight with White. Paint the line details with Black.
  13. Basecoat the scarf with Camel. Shade with Burnt Umber. Highlight with White. Paint the band with Calypso Blue. With Festive Green, paint dots and outline the Calypso Blue band. Paint Xs and outline with Black.
  14. Use a #0 liner brush and Burnt Umber to paint the twig arms. Paint pine needles the same as in step 11 above.
  15. Basecoat the bird with Tuscan Red. Shade with Black Plum. Paint the beak with Camel. Shade with Burnt Umber.
  16. Highlight the tail feathers and wings with White. (Just a little…you don’t want this to jump out at you if it’s too bright.)
  17. Paint behind the eye with Black. Dot the eye with White and again with Black. Outline with Black.
  18. Basecoat the mittens with Festive Green. Paint the stars on the mittens with Camel. Basecoat the tops of the mittens with Camel. Shade the tops of the mittens and stars with Burnt Umber. Paint all details with Black.
  19. Basecoat the shoes with Black. Highlight with White.
  20. Shade around the Contac paper with Calypso Blue and add Black stitches about 1/8" out.
  21. Use a cosmetic or art sponge to add White across the bottoms and on toes of shoes.
  22. Paint snowflakes using a 20/0 script liner brush and White. Paint all dots with White.
  23. To finish, spray with Americana Matte Spray Sealer. Let dry.
  24. Make sure all paint is completely dry. Score around the Contac paper with an X-Acto Knife and lift off.
  25. Tape a favorite photo to the back of the glass and return it to the frame.

HELPFUL HINTS

When painting with Americana Gloss Enamels, it is easier to get good coverage with sponge.

If you don’t have mini sponges, make them by cutting pieces off of larger sponges.

Be sure to spray the frame with Americana Matte Spray Sealer before peeling off the Contac paper. If adhesive is left on glass, clean it with alcohol and a paper towel.
