    INSTRUCTIONS

    NOTES:

Let dry completely between painting steps.

    1. STOP AND SMELL THE POPPIES: Adhere the book pages on the front and sides of the canvas using Americana Matte Decou-Page. Use an old credit card or brayer to smooth down wrinkles. (It’s not necessary to smooth out all the wrinkles if you want more texture.) Apply Decou-Page on the top of the pages to seal.
    2. Once dry, with a larger brush, apply a watery wash of Baby Blue over the front and sides of the canvas, wiping some back with a slightly damp paper towel and adding or taking away color until you get the look you desire. (Let the text show through the paint.)
    3. When dry, edge the sides of the canvas with Antique Gold and smudge with a finger.
    4. Stencil on the fronts and sides with a stencil of your choice and a light coating of Natural Buff. Let dry.
    5. Transfer the poppy pattern onto the canvas, wrapping the design around the sides. (See photo.)
    6. With the #6 shader brush, apply one coat of Spiced Pumpkin on all poppies except for the centers and let dry.
    7. Mix equal parts of Cinnamon Drop and Spiced Pumpkin and paint over the poppies; let dry.
    8. Mix some Banana Cream and Cinnamon Drop and, using a dry brush, brush over random areas of the petals for highlights. Add bits of Cinnamon Drop and Spiced Pumpkin with the #4 shader brush over other areas randomly for added texture and dimension.
    9. With the #4 shader brush, fill in the center of the poppies with a mix of Burnt Umber and Lamp Black. When still wet, wipe a little away in the very centers for highlight. Repeat.
    10. Shade the petal sides with a watery mix of Burnt Umber and Lamp Black, smudging and blending with a finger.
    11. Continue adding Cinnamon Drop, Spiced Pumpkin, and Banana Cream, to poppy, adding and taking away until you’re happy with the results.
    12. Using the liner brush, add lines around some petals with the Burnt Umber/Lamp Black mixture. Put some Burnt Umber/Lamp Black lines coming out of the centers, blending with a finger. (See photo.)
    13. Paint in the stems with the #4 shader brush and mixture of Burnt Umber and Irish Moss. Shade on one side of each stem with watery Burnt Umber.
    14. Paint a 1-1/2” x 9” piece of corrugated cardboard with a mixture of Irish Moss and Burnt Umber, painting the inside of cardboard grooves with just Burnt Umber for shading. Let dry.
    15. Adhere cardboard to the bottom of canvas with Decou-Page working around the sides. Seal the top of cardboard with Decou-Page and let dry.
    16. Generate text words from the computer, find them in a book, or use alphabet stickers to spell out the phrase “stop and smell the poppies”. Decou-Page the phrase to the canvas. (See photo.) (If using generated computer words, edge all sides with a black inkpad before adhering to the canvas.)
    17. Place the bird template as an outline on fun foam. Cut out and paint the bird with two coats of Antique Gold. Let dry. When dry, adhere it to the canvas with Decou-Page and seal the top of the bird with Decou-Page.
    18. Fill in the bird's facial features and outline the bird with Lamp Black.
    19. Using the handle end of a paintbrush, dip it into Cinnamon Drop to make random polka dots on the bird.
    20. Paint larger dots across the top of the canvas above the poppies with Banana Cream and Cinnamon Drop. (See photo.) Add doodle lines with a black marker. Let dry.
    21. When all is dry, apply two coats of DuraClear Gloss Varnish to the top and sides of the canvas.
    22. POPPY MIXED MEDIA CANVAS: Adhere the text pages on the front and sides of the canvas using DecouPage, smoothing out wrinkles with an old credit card or brayer. (It’s not necessary to smooth out all wrinkles if you want more texture.) Apply Decou-Page on top to seal in paper. Let dry.
    23. Once dry, with a larger brush, apply a watery wash of Irish Moss over the front and sides of the canvas. Wipe some back with a slightly damp paper towel, adding and taking away color until you get the look you desire. (Let text show through paint.) Let dry.
    24. When dry, edge the canvas sides with Banana Cream and smudge with a finger. Repeat with Antique Gold; let dry.
    25. Transfer the poppy design to the center of the canvas.
    26. Apply one coat of Spiced Pumpkin with the #10 shader brush on the poppy except for the center. Let dry.
    27. When dry, apply an equal mix of Spiced Pumpkin and Cinnamon Drop over poppy; let dry.
    28. Mix together Banana Cream and Cinnamon Drop. Using a dry brush, brush over random areas of the petals for highlights. (See photo.) Add bits of Cinnamon Drop and Spiced Pumpkin over other areas randomly for added texture and dimension.
    29. With the #4 shader brush, fill in the center of the poppy with a mix of Burnt Umber and Lamp Black. While still wet, wipe a little away in the very center for a highlight. Repeat.
    30. Shade the petal sides with a watery mix of Burnt Umber and Lamp Black, smudging and blending with your finger. (See photo.) Continue adding Cinnamon Drop, Spiced Pumpkin, and Banana Cream, to poppy, adding and taking away until you’re happy with the results.
    31. Using the liner brush and Burnt Umber/Lamp Black mixture, add lines around some of the petals and lines coming out of the center. Blend with a finger. (See photo.)
    32. Paint in the stem with the #4 shader brush and a mixture of Burnt Umber and Irish Moss. Shade one side with watery Burnt Umber.
    33. Dip the open end of cap of Pitt pen into Natural Buff and randomly stamp on the front and sides of the canvas, avoiding the poppy. Let dry.
    34. When dry, apply two coats of DuraClear Gloss Varnish.
    35. Paint scrabble tiles with watery Antique Gold; wipe some away to bring out the black lettering of tiles. Edge tiles with the Pitt pen, smudging just a bit with a finger.
    36. Apply two coats of DuraClear Gloss Varnish to the tiles; let dry. Glue the tiles to the canvas. (See photo.)
    37. Paint the finials Cinnamon Drop and let dry. When dry, apply two coats of DuraClear Gloss Varnish and glue them to the top of the canvas.
