Owl Pair Ornaments from Gourds

Combine the shape of a gourd and the bright colors of Americana® Multi-Surface Acrylics into these clever ornaments.

SUPPLIES

    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate
    • paper towels
    • tracing paper
    • transfer paper
    • scissors
    • #2 round brush
    • #10 flat brush
    • craft glue
    • #1 liner brush
    • pen
    • small oval
    • two small gourd ornaments

    INSTRUCTIONS

    NOTES:

    Let dry completely between painting steps.

    1. Make sure the surfaces of the gourds are clean and dust-free.
    2. Use a pen to trace and transfer the patterns onto each of the gourds.
    3. TURQUOISE & GOLD OWL: Use a #10 flat brush to basecoat the outer body with Coastal Waters. Rinse brush.
    4. Use a #2 round brush to paint the outer eye section and belly with Muted Gold. Rinse brush.
    5. Use a #1 liner brush and load separately with Blue Lagoon, Muted Gold, and Steel Grey to make short dashes all over the Coastal Waters section. Rinse brush between colors and at the end.
    6. Use a #1 liner brush with Coastal Waters to create the stripes around the eyes. Rinse brush.
    7. Use #1 liner brush with Steel Grey to outline both eye sections. Rinse brush.
    8. Use #1 liner brush with Blue Lagoon to paint swirls on owl's belly.
    9. BEIGE & RED OWL: Use a #10 flat brush and load with Overcast to basecoat the outer body. Rinse brush.
    10. Use a #2 round brush with Red Barn to paint the outer eye section and belly. Rinse brush.
    11. Use a #1 liner brush and load separately with Cocoa Bean, Brown Sugar, Steel Grey, and a very small amount of Barn Red to paint short dashes all over the Overcast section. Rinse brush between colors and at the end.
    12. Use a #1 liner brush with Cocoa Bean to create stripes around the eyes. Rinse brush.
    13. Use a #1 liner brush with Brown Sugar to outline both eye sections. Rinse brush.
    14. Use a #1 liner brush with Steel Grey to paint swirls on the owl's belly. Rinse brush.
    15. BOTH OWLS: Use a #2 round brush with Black Tie to paint on the eyes on both owls. Rinse brush.
    16. Use scissors to cut a wooden disk in half to create beaks. Use a #2 round brush to paint both beaks with Black Tie. Rinse brush.
    17. Use a #1 liner brush to paint nose holes on both owls, one using Blue Lagoon and the other using Red Barn. Rinse brush. HIghlight both with Cotton Ball. Rinse brush.
    18. Use a #1 liner brush with Cotton Ball to add a comma shape as a highlight on lower right corner of the eye. (See photo for placement.) Use the handle end of the liner brush dipped in Cotton Ball to add reflection to eyes. Rinse brush and wipe off handle.
    19. Use craft glue to attach the beaks to the owls' faces.
