Stenciled "Motor Motel" Mixed Media Frame

Make a mixed media memory frame for summertime adventures with DecoArt Media®.

SUPPLIES

    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate
    • paper towels
    • scissors
    • #12 flat brush
    • #1 round brush
    • assorted scrapbook paper
    • printed images
    • wooden frame

    INSTRUCTIONS

    NOTES:

    Let dry completely between painting steps.

    1. Remove the plastic packaging and cardboard insert from the frame.

    3. Use a #12 flat brush to apply Matte Medium over the entire frame in a medium thickness.

    5. Tear or use scissors to trim scrapbook papers to fit in the frame. Place the paper on wet Matte Medium on the frame and brush more Matte Medium on top to seal.

    7. Continue to overlap papers and add more Matte Medium on top. Rinse brush.

    9. Use a #12 flat brush and Primary Yellow to paint random dashes on the top section of the frame. Rinse brush.

    11. Use the same brush and Matte Medium to seal the top section of the frame. Rinse brush.

    13. Use the same brush and Primary Cyan to add random dashes toward the bottom half of the frame.

    15. Use the same brush to paint over the bottom half of the frame with Ultramarine Blue. Rinse brush.
    16. Print out images of cars and palm trees of your choice. Use scissors to cut the car with a frame big enough to fit the frame opening. (The palm trees can be cut with no frame.)

    18. Use a #1 round brush and Cadmium Red Hue to paint the car. Rinse brush. Load the same brush with Silver (Metallic) to paint the the grill, lights, and bumper. Rinse brush.

    20. Use the #12 flat brush and Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide thinned with water to paint the background closest to the car in a rectangular shape. Load the brush with Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide (full-strength) to finish the rectangle to the edge. Rinse brush.

    22. Place the star layering stencil over the car. Lightly pounce a cosmetic sponge loaded with Cadmium Red Hue over the stars to make two rows below and two rows above the car. Wash stencil.

    24. Brush Matte Medium on the middle to bottom right section of the frame.

    26. Position the palm trees on the wet Matte Medium and brush more Matte Medium on top to seal. Rinse brush.

    28. Place the Signs Stencil over the top left corner of the frame at an angle. Use painter's tape to protect areas you are not painting yet.
    29. Load a cosmetic sponge with Cadmium Red Hue and lightly dab over the arrow. Remove the tape over the rest of the stencil.

    31. Use a new cosmetic sponge. Load with Carbon Black to fill in the section above and below the arrow.

    33. Load a new cosmetic sponge with Titanium White; squeeze the sponge to fit the bottom section and lightly dab on. Wash stencil. Let dry completely.

    35. When the car photo is dry, position in the frame.
    36. Use the #1 round brush and Titanium White to paint the word "Motel". (To make it more interesting, allow words to run off the edge.)

    38. Use the same brush to paint the word "Motor" on the top section with a shadow.

    40. Use the same brush to paint the word "Welcome" in cursive. Rinse brush.

    42. Use a #1 round brush with Cadmium Red Hue to paint the word "Vacancy". Rinse brush.
