Create an altered book cover using a map to highlight memorable events.

SUPPLIES

    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate
    • paper towels
    • baby wipes
    • 1" painter's tape
    • cosmetic sponge
    • plastic cling wrap
    • old magazine
    • map
    • old book
    • plastic sheet
    • stamps

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Wrap the pages of the book with clear plastic cling wrap. Secure with painter’s tape, placing the tape evenly along the inside edge of the cover. Apply White Gesso to both the outside and inside covers of the book.
    2. Instruction #1
    3. Tear the map into rectangles to fit the book covers and spine. Adhere the map pieces to the covers and spine with Matte Medium. Cut a star shape from a scrap of lightweight plastic and place over the location you wish to highlight. Use a cosmetic sponge to pounce Carbon Black around the star. (The city name was small on the map I used so I printed “Stanford” from a computer using a size 10 font; cut it out; and adhered it with Matte Medium.) Outline the location name with Carbon Black.
    4. Instruction #2
    5. Randomly stamp images with Carbon Black over the map, choosing images that relates to the theme of the book. (I chose the word “Paint” as DecoArt manufactures paint and butterflies as they are colorful.) Cut out letters from old magazines to create words and adhere them with Matte Medium. (I found the easiest way to position the book for painting was to use two tall mugs to support the covers.) Refer to photo.
    6. Instruction #3
    7. Randomly apply Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide and Raw Sienna. Pounce a crumpled baby wipe into the paint while still wet, lifting paint in some areas to create a variety of values. Wipe back over the star area to keep it lighter. Use a folded baby wipe loaded with Raw Sienna to darken the edges.
    8. Instruction #4
    9. Apply Clear Crackle Glaze to the entire cover. When completely dry and cracks have formed, apply a coat of Raw Umber Antiquing Cream. When dry, wipe away with a damp paper towel, creating desired color and showing crackle pattern.
    10. Instruction #5
    11. Apply Black Modeling Paste through the Andy Skinner Shedded Stencil in random areas of the covers. (Hint: If this texture is too dark, you can apply a coat of Raw Umber Antiquing Cream to tone it down.)
    12. Instruction #6
    13. Paint the inside covers using the same steps (2 -6). Apply two coats of Satin Varnish to protect the book.
    14. Remove the plastic cling wrap and fold the pages: This technique can be applied to the cover of any book or journal, but to create a work of art out of the book, try folding the pages to spell out a word. Use one of the many page-folding patterns available on Etsy or watch [[this|http://www.instructables.com/id/Folded-Book-Art-Best-most-clear-Tutorial-available/]].
