INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Measure and cut out a piece of burlap 18" wide by 12" high. Pull off three threads from all four sides, creating frayed edges on all sides. Position the burlap placemat on top of some palette paper.
  2. Using the large stencil brush, work Matte Decou-Page into the fibers of the burlap including the frayed edges. Turn the placemat over and repeat on the back side. Allow to dry. Clean the stencil brush immediately in warm water and soap.
  3. Slide a piece of palette paper under the placemat. Position the "In all things Give Thanks" stencils in the center of the placemat. Secure with painter's tape.
  4. Dip the medium stencil brush into a 1:1 mix of Soft Black and Traditional Burnt Umber. Pounce it onto a dry paper towel. Pounce the color onto the stencil, loading the brush as before until all the words are filled in.
  5. Immediately clean the brush and stencil in Brush and Stencil Cleaner.
  6. Position the maple leaf (from the upper right hand corner of the Maple Leaves Stencil sheet) approximately 1.5" from the upper right-hand corner of the burlap placemat. (Use painter's tape for masking off the area around the maple leaf to shield the placemat from any unwanted paint.) Slip a piece of palette paper under the placemat.
  7. Place five puddles of Dazzling Metallics onto a waxed palette: Splendid Gold, Bronze, Royal Ruby, Festive Red, and Festive Green.
  8. Dip the medium stencil brush into one puddle at a time. Pounce it up and down on the waxed palette and then pounce it onto one leaf at a time. Change colors by wiping the brush well into a dry paper towel and dipping it into a new color. Pounce and blend each leaf until it is filled in with color. Repeat this for the bottom left hand corner. (This stencil blending will be repeated for all the leaves.)
  9. Cut out the small maple leaf from the Assorted Leaves Stencil, leaving a 1/4" border around the leaf. Position it below the maple leaf in the upper right-hand corner of the placemat. Place painter's tape around the entire leaf to mask it off.
  10. Stencil as in Steps 7 & 8. (You will use this same small maple leaf on the bottom left corner of the placemat.) When finished, clean the stencil brush and stencils with Brush and Stencil Cleaner. Let placemat dry.
  11. When the paint is dry, use a mix of Soft Black and Traditional Burnt Umber with a bit of water and a #1 liner brush to outline each leaf.
  12. Mix (2) parts Carbon, (1) part Rustic, and (1) part Rouge into a 2-oz. bottle with a screw top lid. Use a 1” wash brush to paint the plate charger with the mix. Let dry. Lightly sand; remove dust; paint again; and allow to dry. Save the mix for any touch-ups and for the candle wrap.
  13. Using white transfer paper, trace on as few lines as possible. NOTE: The line drawing is repeated three times on the plate evenly spaced.
  14. Cut out the medium maple leaf from the 6" x 6" Maple Leaves Stencil, leaving as much of a border as possible in the upper right-hand corner.
  15. Cut out the small maple leaf from the 12 x 12" Assorted Leaves Stencil again leaving as much of a border as possible. (You will be using three sizes of the maple leaves: the large on the 6" x 6" stencil, the medium on the 6 x 6" stencil; and the small on the 12 x 12" stencil.)
  16. Position the large maple leaf on the plate. Using painter's tape, mask off the area around the leaf to protect the area of the plate that you do not want the paste to adhere to.
  17. Place 1/4 of the jar of Dimensional Effects on palette paper. Mix a small amount of Splendid Gold into the Dimensional Effects with a palette knife. (You do not want the paste too soft.)
  18. Apply the paste to the stencil using a palette knife. (Apply as if you were frosting a cake.) Smooth down the stencil in front of the paste with your left thumb and move the paste across the stencil. Gently lift off the stencil and wash off all the extra paste.
  19. Pat dry and move on to the next grouping of leaves, being careful not to disturb the wet paste. Repeat the process. Allow all three large leaves to dry. Put the extra Dimensional Effects/Splendid Gold mix in a jar with a screw lid to keep it from drying out.
  20. Repeat the process on the plate, masking off the area around the medium size stencil and completing all three leaf groupings. Let dry.
  21. When dry, repeat the stenciling with the small maple leaf two times on each leaf grouping. Allow it to dry and then do the three small maple leaves again, having four leaves in each grouping. Let all dry.
  22. When the Dimensional Paste is thoroughly dry, put the stencil on top of the dry paste to act as a shield. Mask off the area on the stencil where it meets the plate.
  23. Put out five puddles of the Dazzling Metallics on a waxed palette: Splendid Gold, Bronze, Royal Ruby, Festive Red, and Festive Green.
  24. Dip the medium stencil brush into one of the puddles of Dazzling Metallics. Pounce it onto the wax palette. Pounce the brush onto the leaf, filling in some of the area.
  25. Wipe the brush onto a paper towel and dip it into a different color. (Wipe it well on a paper towel to help clear out the previous color. )
  26. Dip the brush into the same puddle again; pounce it onto the waxed palette; and apply it again on top of the dried Dimensional Paste. Blend each leaf so that you have a gradation of color. Repeat the same process before applying the rest of the colors. (You want to see subtle changes of color covering all of the textured leaf.) Lift off the stencil; move it to another leaf; and repeat the process.
  27. Immediately clean the brush and stencil with Brush and Stencil Cleaner.
  28. To correct any slips of color, paint over the mistakes with the basecoat color of the plate. Allow to dry.
  29. Using Soft Black and a #1 liner brush, add vein lines to each maple leaf.
  30. Finishing: Add a topcoat to the plate using Soft-Touch Varnish applied with a 1" oval wash brush. Apply three coats allowing it to dry two hours between coats.
  31. Measure and cut out a piece of burlap 13.4" x 6.5". Pull off three threads from all four sides creating a frayed edges on all sides. Position the burlap candle wrap on top of waxed paper.
  32. Use a large stencil brush, work Matte Decou-Page into the fibers of the burlap including the frayed edges. Turn the candle wrap over and repeat on the back side. Allow to dry.
  33. Position the Give Thanks stencil in the center of the candle wrap. Secure with painter's tape.
  34. Using the medium stencil brush, dip it into the mix from Step 12. Pounce the stencil brush onto a dry paper towel. Pounce the color onto the stencil loading the brush as before until all the words are filled in.
  35. The striping is masked off with painter's tape, 5/8" from the top of the fringed edge and 3/8" wide. Using the medium stencil brush, stencil it in using the five Dazzling Metallics colors from Step 7, blending as you move along the stripe. Allow to dry.
  36. For an alternate candle wrap: Cut out a piece of Roc-lon 13.4" x 6.5". Using a 1" wash brush, paint the front and back the same Chalky Paint color mix as the plate (Step 12). Allow to dry. Lightly sand and apply another coat of the mix.
  37. Position the Give Thanks stencil in the center of the candle wrap. Secure with painter's tape.
  38. Put out five puddles of Dazzling Metallics onto a waxed palette: Splendid Gold, Bronze, Royal Ruby, Festive Red, and Festive Green.
  39. Dip the medium stencil brush into one of the Metallics. Pounce the stencil brush onto a dry paper towel. Pounce the color onto the stencil filling in some of the area.
  40. Wipe the brush onto a paper towel and dip it into a different color. Wipe it well on a paper towel again to help clear out the previous color. Dip the brush into the same puddle again; pounce it onto the waxed palette; and then apply it, loading the brush as before and blending into each new Metallic color until all the words are filled in.
  41. The striping is masked off with painter's tape. 5/8" from the top and 5/8" from the bottom of the wrap. Each band is 1/2" wide. Using a #8 stencil brush stencil it in using the five Dazzling Metallic colors (used in Step 38), blending as you move along the stripe. Allow to dry.
  42. Varnish with two coats Soft-Touch Varnish, allowing to dry two hours between coats.
  43. Fasten on velcro and wrap around an 8" flameless candle.
