Friends are Like Flowers Mixed Media Canvas

Experiment with different techniques with a simple mixed media project using Americana Acrylics.

SUPPLIES

    • water container
    • palette or plastic plate
    • paper towels
    • transfer paper
    • 5" x 7" canvas panel
    • black ink
    • 1" foam brush
    • canvas
    • white glue
    • assorted scrapbook paper
    • round brush
    • text words, cut from book or magazine and printed from computer
    • spray bottle
    • detail brush
    • rub on transfer

    INSTRUCTIONS

    NOTES:

    Let dry completely between painting steps.

    1. Paint the bottom portion of the large canvas Wasabi Green using a 1" foam brush. This does not have the be a straight line. Quickly and lightly spray with water. Take a paper towel and dab the green painted area to take away some of the green paint. This will leave some of the pattern from the paper towel and add dimension to the project.

    3. Paint the rest of the canvas using Indian Turquoise, again lightly spray with water and dab with paper towel.

    5. Paint the small canvas panel with Indian Turquoise, spray lightly and dab with paper towel. Dip round brush in water and then in Indian Turquoise. Flick the brush to place splatters onto the canvas.

    7. Place harlequin stencil on large canvas. Take 1" foam brush dipped in Tangelo Orange and randomly paint stencil. Repeat for small canvas.

    9. Repeat previous step, using White Wash, paint lightly over the harlequins that were previously stenciled. Seal entire canvas with Decou-Page Matte using 1" foam brush.
    10. Transfer ten flower petals and three buds to assorted scrapbook paper and cut out. Use Decou-Page to adhere petals, five in each grouping, to create a flower. Repeat for three buds.

    12. Using the round brush and Avocado paint, create stems coming from the two flowers and three buds to the bottom of the canvas. Paint a bit of grass and ground to the bottom of the stems.

    14. With carbon paper, transfer lettering to small canvas.

    16. Using Soft Black paint and detail brush, paint over the wording.

    18. With black pen, loosely trace around the petals of each flower to bring it all together.

    20. With white glue, glue down the small panel onto the larger canvas.
    21. With a touch of Tangelo Orange, dip your finger in paint and rub a little of this around the edges of both canvases.

    23. Optionally: take rub ons and randomly place them on your flowers and around the small canvas.
