DIY Tabletop Garden

Looking for a cute and unexpected tabletop garden idea?  I'll show you how to take a basic wood birdhouse and transform it with Patio Paint into the prettiest tabletop herb garden fairy house.

There are lots of inexpensive wood birdhouses available at the craft store ready for paint.  And we can easily transform that birdhouse into a tabletop garden by cutting holes through the roof.  Then take it a step further and paint the wood to look like a fairy house!

Items Needed:

  • Unpainted Wood Bird House
  • Multi-Tool With Flat Cutting Blade
  • Sandpaper
  • Scrap Wood
  • Jig Saw Or Hand Saw
  • Wood Glue
  • Assorted Brushes

Instructions:

So pretty, bright and fresh and an easy look to achieve.

This project begins with a tiny modification to the wood birdhouse. Draw a line on the roof about 1/2" in from each edge.  This will be the cutting line.

Use a multi-tool with the flat cutting blade to cut through the roof on the lines.  In addition cut off the little bird post.

To cover the holes in the birdhouse cut out various fairy doors and windows from scrap wood.  Be sure the size will cover the existing holes in the birdhouse.  Use wood glue to secure the doors and windows to the birdhouse.

Add fun details like flowers and door knobs with contrasting paint colors.  To make the flowers use the end of your paintbrush and make small dots.  Then take a small detail brush and dry the green stems

Just a few flowers makes such a difference.  Tip: Making the dot style flowers is my cheat method! I'm terrible at freehand painting flowers so this is my go to method.

The fairies now have a colorful home complete with a white picket fence.

I lined each birdhouse section with plastic prior to adding the soil and herbs.  The plastic helps keep the moisture in and prolongs the life of the wood.

I planted sorrel, cilantro and basil, any herbs you use frequently will work in this tabletop garden.

Having this pretty tabletop herb garden in my kitchen makes me want to cook all the things!
