INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Copy the pattern for the frame and banners onto tracing paper and position it onto the front of the canvas board, centered with top edge 5/8” from the top edge. Using a stylus or ballpoint pen, trace over the pattern lines on the tracing paper with graphite transfer paper between the tracing paper and canvas board.
  2. Print out either a black and white or Daguerreotype photo onto white paper. (If you are using inkjet printer or some other printer that may smear, spray both sides of the printed photo with Americana Matte Spray Finish. Spray three coats over front and back, allowing to dry between coats. If you know the ink won’t run when it gets wet, don’t bother with the Matte Spray Finish.)
  3. Following manufacturer’s directions, use 3/4" glaze/wash brush and Americana Matte Decou-Page to decoupage the photo to front of the canvas. (See photo for placement.)
  4. Using a #2 flat shader brush, paint the strip framing the decoupaged photo with 1:1 mix of Tangelo Orange plus Snow White.
  5. Using a #4 flat shader brush, basecoat the banner farthest to left Snow White; next banner, Buttermilk; next, Calico Red; next, Snow White; and next, Buttermilk.
  6. When painting in decorative lines and dots on banners, you can transfer pattern lines as described in step 1 or you can paint them in free-hand.
  7. Using a #2 flat shader brush, paint zigzag lines on the left-most banner with Baby Pink; next, Buttermilk banner with slanted lines of Calypso Blue; next Calico Red banner’s dots, with Snow White (dotting in with end of toothpick); next, vertical lines of Foliage Green; and horizontal lines of Camel.
  8. Using a 3/4” glaze/wash brush, paint the canvas board around the frame Yellow Ochre, extending the paint around the edges.
  9. Using a 3/8” angle shader brush and Raw Sienna, shade around the banners; around and under the narrow Tangelo Orange frame; and inside the edges of the canvas board.
  10. Using a black ultra-fine marker, outline around the narrow frame and the banners.
  11. Using a piece of medium-grit sandpaper, sand lightly and randomly on the canvas board. (See photo.)
