This shelving may be industrial, but it's not dull, thanks to Americana Decor® Chalky Finish.

    INSTRUCTIONS

    NOTES:

Let dry completely between painting steps.

Sand and thoroughly wipe down entire surface before painting.

    1. Remove any backing material and measure the inside dimensions of the bookshelf. Cut the corrugated metal with tin snips to fit the back.
    2. Instruction #1
    3. Measure and cut scrap wood to attach to the back of the shelf.
    4. Instruction #2
    5. Put (2) pocket holes in the end of each piece of the scrap wood.
    6. Attach the scrap wood pieces to the back of the bookshelf, keeping them flush with the sides of the bookshelf. (This is what the metal will be attached to.)
    7. Instruction #4
    8. Using a table saw, cut the back edge of shelves to compensate for the added materials. (The scrap wood was 3/4" thick and the metal was 3/4" thick, so 1-1/2" was cut so the shelf would not stick out of the front of the bookshelf.)
    9. Put a pocket hole on the bottom back of the shelf if you cut off the original shelf holder or if the metal covered up the holes to put the shelf holder in. The front shelf holder should still be visible.
    10. Paint the entire bookshelf using Treasure. (Be sure to paint the back edge that the metal will touch.) Let dry.
    11. Instruction #7
    12. Once dry, carefully insert the sheet metal. Try to hide any rough edges with the clean factory-cut edge.
    13. Instruction #8
    14. Pre-drill a few holes to place the sheet metal screws. Carefully screw in each one until tight.
    15. Instruction #9
    16. Touch up any areas where the paint was scratched during the insertion of the metal background.
    17. Place the shelf in and drill pocket screws so that the shelf is sturdy.
    18. Wax all painted surfaces with Clear Crème Wax.
