    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Preparation: Spray the wooden signboard with Americana Matte Spray Finish to seal.
    2. Sand with fine-grit sandpaper.
    3. Trace the pattern onto tracing paper with a pencil or stylus. Transfer the oval, coffee cup with saucer, and the checkered pattern onto the signboard using transfer paper and a stylus or pencil. Use a ruler to help transfer straight lines for checkered area. (Omit rest of design until later.)
    4. Use a 3/4" flat brush to basecoat the oval Dark Scarlet.
    5. Use a 3/4" flat brush to basecoat the top half of the signboard Orange Sherbet.
    6. Use a 3/8" angle or #10 flat brush to fill in the checkered pattern with Cotton Ball and Black Tie.
    7. Use a 3/8" angle brush to fill in the coffee cup and saucer with Vanilla Shake and the coffee with Cocoa Bean.
    8. Outline around the oval with Black Tie using #0 liner brush.
    9. Use a 3/4" flat brush to basecoat the edges and back of the signboard Black Tie.
    10. Use a #0 liner brush to paint the groove around the signboard Dark Scarlet.
    11. Allow everything to dry or use a hairdryer to speed up the drying time.
    12. Use a 3/4" flat brush to blend a corner-load of Orange Sherbet into the top half of the oval.
    13. Use a 3/8" angle brush to blend a corner-load of Black Tie into the bottom half of the oval for shadow areas.
    14. Allow to dry and then transfer remaining parts of pattern: spoon, coffee lettering, flowers, and stroke lines. (Omit steam coming from cup. That will be the last step of the project and should be done freehand if possible.)
    15. Use Cotton Ball and a #2 round brush for small areas and a 3/8" angle brush for large areas to fill in highlight areas on the cup and saucer. (Refer to dotted lines on the pattern for placement.) Use a #4 blender brush to gently soften and blend edges. (Do one area at a time so you can easily blend and soften edges away.)
    16. Mix Vanilla Shake and Steel Grey 1:1 for the first shadow layer. (This goes in all shadow areas. Refer to photo for placement.)
    17. Mix Vanilla Shake and Steel Grey 1:2 to deepen shadows. (This goes on top of first shadows, but you use less of it, and it stays in darker areas.)
    18. Use Steel Grey to deepen darkest shadows one more time. (You can even mix a little Black Tie into this color if you want shadows even darker.)
    19. Allow to dry.
    20. Tint some shadow areas with a wash of Deep Turquoise using corner-load on a 3/8" angle brush. (Use color sparingly and thin it with 50% water.)
    21. Use Black Tie and a #10/0 liner brush to outline the bottom edges of the handle and cup. (Use a #4 blender brush to soften the line if it looks too pronounced. Refer to photo.) Don’t outline the entire handle.
    22. Use a 3/8" angle brush to shade the top of the coffee area with a corner-load of Coffee Bean; deepen with Black Tie.
    23. Use a #2 round brush loaded with Vanilla Shake to make a spiral in the center of the coffee. Use a #4 blender brush to soften the edges of the spiral so it blends into the coffee. (Wait to do steam.)
    24. Fill in the spoon with Steel Grey.
    25. Shade with a corner-load of Black Tie on a 3/8" angle brush. Blend the color on the top edge of the spoon handle and on the spoon where it connects to the handle. (Use a #4 blender brush to soften and blend the edges when doing the shadows and highlights.)
    26. Highlight the spoon with Cotton Ball using a #10/0 liner brush. (Refer to photo; leave a thin edge of Steel Grey between the edge of the spoon and the highlight.)
    27. Outline the spoon with Black Tie using a #10/0 liner brush. Soften with a #4 blender brush if the lines become too pronounced.
    28. Fill in the lettering with Deep Turquoise using a #2 round brush.
    29. Outline the right edges of the letters with Black Tie, using a #10/0 liner brush.
    30. Add a thin line of Cotton Ball in the center of each letter using a #10/0 liner brush.
    31. Add strokes near the cup with Deep Turquoise and a #10/0 liner brush. The strokes on the sides of the signboard are done with Black Tie and the same brush.
    32. Use a #10/0 liner brush and Black Tie to paint the flower lines. (Make some lines thicker than others to add interest.) Add some lines between the flower petals with Poppy. The bottom left flower and leaves have some Dark Scarlet lines added where it overlaps into the background shadow area.
    33. Thin Cotton Ball with 50% to 80% water so color is very transparent. Use a #2 round brush to load paint and wipe most of it off on palette paper before making strokes for steam rising from the coffee.
    34. Let dry completely. Seal with Americana Matte Spray Finish for added protection
