Technique Inspiration Board

One way to remember some of the different painting - techniques of Andy Skinner is to paint on good quality cardboard (tags) and writing a description and used products on the back. Bind cardboard together with a book ring and you have a nice inspiration (tag) book to go. My idea was to create an elaborately designed but not complicated technique board to visualize a few techniques at a single glance in my studio.

Instructions :

Start by cutting two circles ( diameter 15“ same size each) from cardboard and corrugated cardboard. Draw sections like a mosaic to cardboard and cut.

It's a good idea to number consecutively on the back of sections to prevent confusion. Paint the base circle of corrugated cardboard with Americana Multi-Surface Satin Black Tie. If your corrugated cardboard starts warping, paint the back, too.

Now on to the painting techniques on the different sections. When complete they are adhered - to the black painted - corrugated cardboard base - with Media Liquid Glass.

Apply Media Gesso black with a pallet knife and let dry. Apply Media Modeling Paste black with a pallet knife and let dry. Apply Media Modeling Paste black with stencil and let dry. Use Vaseline to some spots where you want the paint to resist. Create a mix of Media Fluid Acrylics Titan Buff and one drop of Media Fluid Acrylics Phethalo Turquoise and paint colour – mix to both sections. When dry use a cloth to remove the vaseline. Paint a wash of Media Fluid Acrylics Quinacridone Gold on top.

Base coat with Media Gesso black. Paint a layer of Media Fluid Acrylics Metallic silver. Stamp with StazOn. Apply washes of Media Fluid Acrylics Paynes Grey and sprinkle salt into the washes ( featured by Andy Skinner at Hochanda) Remove salt, when dry. Paint a wash of Media Fluid Acrylics Quinacridone Gold around the edges and a wash of Media Fluid Acrylics Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide in the middle. Stencil on top with Media Gesso white.

Base coat with Media Gesso black. Apply a layer of Media Texture Sand Paste. Paint a layer of Media Fluid Acrylics Burnt Umber. Apply thin washes of Media Fluid Acrylics Quinacridone Gold and Media Fluid Acrylics Paynes Grey.

Base coat with Media Gesso black and apply Media Crackle Paint. When dry, paint a wash of Media Fluid Acrylics Phethalo Blue and when that layer is dry, paint a wash of Media Fluid Acrylics Quinacridone Gold. Apply Media Fluid Acrylics Interference Turquoise on top.

Base coat with Media Gesso black and apply Media Crackle Paint. When dry, paint a wash of Media Fluid Acrylics Phethalo Blue and when that layer is dry, paint a wash of Media Fluid Acrylics Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide on top.

Paint wash of Media Fluid Acrylics Paynes Grey, sprinkle salt over the gear and let dry. Bolts are painted the same. Remove the dried salt and paint a wash of Media Fluid Acrylics Quinacridone Gold. For a different look, paint some gears / bolts first with Media Fluid Acrylics Metallic Silver.

Base Coat the heart with Media Gesso white. Paint a layer of Media Fluid Acrylics Pyrrole Red. Stamp with StazOn. Apply a good layer of Media Crackle Glaze and let dry. Paint Media Antiquing Cream black on top and when dry, remove the Antiquing Cream with a damp cloth.

The big gear, underneath the heart, has a base coat with Media Gesso white. Stamped with StazOn and applied Media Texture Sand Paste on some spots. When dry, painted Media Fluid Acrylics Burnt Umber only on top of Texture Sand Paste. Paint Media Fluid Acrylics Quinacridone Gold on top.
