Dining Set Makeover with Satin Enamels

Dining Set Makeover with Satin Enamels

Posted by DecoArt on Dec 26th 2016

Instead of buying a brand new dining set that costs hundreds if not thousands of dollars, update your existing set with paint.  Today, I am sharing my Dining Set Makeover with Satin Enamels.  Americana Decor Satin Enamels paints are super durable with a satin finish.  This paint works great for high-traffic areas like the kitchen and dining room.  The smooth satinn finish is easily brushed on and ensures fewer brushstrokes and minimal grain raising on wood.  My dining set is modern and fresh looking thanks to this makeover.

We have had this dining set for 11 years now and the color is outdated.  The reddish finish is just not working in our home.  There are a few nicks and stains on the table too.  We have painted the walls a light gray with bright white trim and baseboards.  Instead of buying a new set, which is not in our budget, we gave the table and chairs some paint love with American Decor Stain Enamels and it looks brand new.

Items Needed:

Instructions:

Start by gathering your supplies.  We set up the HomeRight Spray Shelter in our garage. The only prep we did was wipe down the table and chairs before painting. The Satin Enamels are so easy to use with little to no prep and no finish required.

Because I am painting a dark wood table and chairs white, it took 4 coats of Americana Decor Satin Enamels in Pure White.  We used about 3 to 4 of the 8oz jars.  The table top was painted with 4 coats of Americana Decor Stain Enamels in Grey Taupe.  We used about 1 and a half 8oz jars.  If you use a dark color paint you probably won't need as many coats for full coverage.

We diluted the Americana Decor Stain Enamels with water.  Satin Enamels are slightly thick for the HomeRight paint sprayer.  The ratio we used was 3 parts paint to 1 part water. This was a trial and error process.  We sprayed one coat of the diluted paint on each of the chairs.

We finished by hand painting 3 coats of the Pure White to the chairs using a durable paint brush.  Make sure to lightly sand in between coats and let each coat dry completely before applying addition coats.

The table was too large to take outside so we painted inside our dining room.  We hand painted 4 coats of Americana Decor Satin Enamels in Grey Taupe to the table top and 4 coats of Pure White to the legs of the table.  I love all white but I wanted to break it up with the Grey Taupe.  It's a beautiful color and is quickly becoming the go-to neutral color.

This dining set makeover was a labor of love but I am so happy with the end result.  I love the neutral colors and satin finish.  It wipes smoothly and clean up is easy.  I like added pops of color like the Hairpin Leg Table I made using American Decor Satin Enamels in Woodland Green.  I would say my style is as if Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn had a baby.  I like modern clean lines and traditional decor.
